Xiaomi 18 Pro Rear Display to Feature AI-Generated App Tools

Xiaomi has unveiled a significant expansion for the rear display on its upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro series, introducing a feature that allows users to generate AI-powered apps for specific, quick-task functions. The company, which teased the capability in a video on Weibo, intends to move beyond the static widgets and pre-installed cards that characterized the rear screen on the previous Xiaomi 17 Pro generation.

Xiaomi describes the new functionality as the Versatile Rear Screen. Unlike the previous iteration, which was largely restricted to fixed widgets, clocks, and wallpapers, the new system leverages artificial intelligence to create small, task-specific tools. Examples showcased by the company include egg cooking timers, hydration reminders, Pomodoro timers for productivity, recipe suggestions, and language learning aids such as English word practice.

These tools are designed as lightweight utilities rather than full-scale applications, intended for quick interactions that do not require the user to unlock the main screen. By enabling AI-generated tools, Xiaomi aims to provide a more flexible environment where the display can adapt to user needs without requiring the company to manually develop and push every individual widget.

The decision to prioritize the rear display follows strong adoption metrics in the Chinese market. Xiaomi reported that the previous rear-screen implementation saw over four million daily uses for app cards, while daily wallpaper changes exceeded 3.5 million. This data suggests a significant user appetite for secondary screen interaction, which the company is now attempting to scale through generative AI.

In addition to the AI-generated tools, Xiaomi has confirmed partnerships with several Chinese brands to provide custom app cards for the 18 Pro series. While the company has indicated that the new Pro models are expected to see a global release, it has not yet clarified which specific AI tools or third-party integrations will be available in international markets.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are scheduled to debut in China later this month. Industry reports suggest the devices will be powered by the yet-to-be-announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, marking a significant hardware refresh alongside the software-driven enhancements to the rear display.
