Apple Deploys iOS 27 With Redesigned Siri AI Ahead of iPhone 18 Release

Apple has deployed iOS 27 globally, introducing a comprehensive overhaul to its Siri assistant that features generative artificial intelligence capabilities, on-screen awareness, and personal context retrieval. The software release arrives just days before the retail rollout of the iPhone 18 lineup and marks the first major operating system launch under newly appointed Chief Executive Officer John Ternus.

The free operating system update is rolling out to compatible devices ranging from the iPhone 11 and newer models, alongside the second- and third-generation iPhone SE. However, advanced artificial intelligence features require newer hardware, restricting full access to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 lineup or later. At launch, the updated assistant is available only in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish language support slated for an October release.

The redesigned assistant utilizes large language models to search personal data stored locally on the device, including email messages, calendar events, notes, and photos. Users can retrieve specific information by referencing natural details such as dates, locations, or names of individuals. The interface shifts from single-command queries to continuous back-and-forth conversations, marked visually by a shimmering orb inside the Dynamic Island.

Beyond personal file retrieval, the updated software introduces live web lookups and tighter system integration. A new dedicated Siri app syncs conversation history across supported Apple devices via iCloud. Writing tools integrated into messaging and mail clients can now study individual writing styles, adjust tone, check for weaknesses, and handle expanded grammar suggestions.

Despite the broad availability of iOS 27, accessing the assistant is not automatic. Apple has designated the feature as a beta, requiring users to opt in manually through the settings menu. According to early reports, users may also be placed on a waitlist before activation. Furthermore, regional availability is restricted at launch, with the assistant absent from devices in the European Union and China due to local regulatory hurdles.

In the European Union, Apple withheld the initial Siri AI rollout due to the Digital Markets Act, as EU regulators rejected Apple proposals for safely supporting other virtual assistants while preserving privacy and security. In China, Apple Intelligence features are undergoing local regulatory requirements, including strict rules on artificial intelligence security evaluations, algorithm filings, and data protection, though Chinese regulators cleared Apple Intelligence for registration in July 2026.

Apple has confirmed that cloud-powered features will face daily usage limits enforced at the server level, with the company stating that expanded request limits will eventually be offered as a paid option. "It's personal intelligence that's actually personal," Ternus said during the product introduction, describing an operating system designed to anchor a connected ecosystem.

Integration between the hardware camera and the assistant has expanded via new Visual Intelligence functions. Users can point the camera at physical objects, nutrition labels, or storefronts to extract operational hours, add schedules directly to a calendar, or parse restaurant bills to calculate shared expenses. Safari receives automated tab categorization alongside a Notify Me feature capable of monitoring web pages for product availability and price drops.

Alongside iOS 27, Apple released version 26.7 for users retaining older software builds. This secondary update patches nearly 80 security vulnerabilities while introducing minor features such as emoji additions and customized audio controls for AirPods. In contrast, the flagship iOS 27 update addresses more than 120 security vulnerabilities designed to prevent unauthorized data access and malware installation.

Users seeking to navigate the dual software release can manage their updates through the general settings menu. Those utilizing legacy hardware ineligible for version 27 will receive version 26.7 automatically, while eligible device owners are presented with the option to bypass minor patches and proceed directly to the new operating system.
