Microsoft Refreshes Surface Laptop and Pro with Snapdragon X2 Plus Chips

Microsoft has unveiled second-edition updates to its compact Surface Laptop 13-inch and Surface Pro 12-inch, integrating Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Plus processor to boost performance and efficiency. Announced at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, the refreshed devices feature 25 percent brighter displays reaching 500 nits and are available in a new black colorway. Both models are scheduled for market release on October 13, with the Surface Laptop 13-inch starting at $1,199.99 and the Surface Pro 12-inch starting at $1,149.99.

Surface devices receive driver and firmware updates for Windows OS versions released in the prior 30 months. Devices released before January 1, 2021 receive driver and firmware updates for at least four years from their initial release.

The transition to the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip provides significant performance gains over the inaugural 2024 models. According to Brett Ostrum, corporate vice president of Surface devices, the new processor delivers 18 percent more efficient battery performance, over 60 percent faster graphics, and 95 percent faster on-device AI capabilities. The Surface Pro 12-inch also introduces Microsoft Ink Canvas, an AI-powered tool designed for pen-based sketching, annotating, and text summarization. This feature will be pre-installed on the new Pro model and available for download on other compatible Windows devices starting October 13.

The Snapdragon X2 Plus chip uses the same 3nm process node as the X2 Elite, the same Oryon CPU architecture, the same Adreno X2-45 GPU family, and the same 80 TOPS Hexagon NPU. Additionally, Surface devices released on and after January 1, 2021, receive driver and firmware updates for at least six years from when the device was first released.

Microsoft has standardized the base configuration for these second-edition devices at 16GB of RAM, effectively removing the 8GB entry-level option that was introduced earlier this year to keep prices below $1,000. While the company declined to comment on the future availability of the older 8GB models, they remain in stock at various third-party retailers. The new lineup is accompanied by a redesigned Surface Mouse, which features haptic feedback, a customizable action button, and Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity, priced at $79.99.

Beyond consumer availability, the new Surface devices will be offered to commercial customers through the Surface for Business program beginning October 13. The Surface Pro 12-inch will also introduce an optional 5G configuration, addressing a frequent request for enhanced mobile connectivity in the tablet-laptop hybrid form factor. Both devices retain the aluminum chassis design of their predecessors while incorporating recycled materials, with the Surface Mouse containing 30.8 percent recycled content.
