IIT Madras Announces Swarm Drone Training Under National MeitY SwaYaan Scheme

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has scheduled a five-day symposium and practical training programme focused on swarm drone technology and multi-unmanned aerial vehicle coordination. Scheduled to run from October 12 to 16, 2026, the technical curriculum is targeted at faculty members and research scholars exploring distributed control, autonomous navigation, and intelligent decision-making systems.

Organised by the Department of Aerospace Engineering, the training forms part of SwaYaan, a national initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Official records indicate that the broader SwaYaan initiative was approved in July 2022 with a total funding allocation of nearly ₹90 crore, designed to strengthen domestic unmanned aircraft systems by training more than 40,000 individuals over a five-year period across a network of 30 premier institutions.

The intensive training schedule combines theoretical classroom instruction with practical deployment exercises across multiple technical domains. Core sessions encompass drone fundamentals, autonomy and control frameworks, communication protocols for multi-agent systems, and specialized swarm algorithms.

Participants will engage directly in quadcopter assembly, mission planning workflows, software simulation, and active flight operations. The curriculum also incorporates structured industry interactions alongside an institutional visit to an established commercial drone technology enterprise.

Interested applicants from academic and research backgrounds must submit their registrations by October 5, 2026. The initiative arrives alongside broader technological capacity-building efforts across Indian institutions, including parallel institutional agreements by security forces and technical universities aimed at expanding national proficiency in counter-drone applications, aerial forensics, and critical infrastructure protection.
