MediaTek Launches 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro Chip for Agentic AI

MediaTek has officially launched the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its first mobile processor built on a 2nm process node. The new flagship chipset is designed to handle complex, on-device agentic AI tasks, positioning MediaTek as a competitor to Apple and Samsung in the race to adopt next-generation silicon architecture. The company also introduced a more accessible 9600M variant, with both chips expected to appear in high-end smartphones before the end of 2026.

Architecture and Performance Gains

The Dimensity 9600 Pro utilizes an octa-core layout featuring a 2+3+3 configuration, with two prime cores reaching a peak clock speed of 4.55GHz, three performance cores at 4.35GHz, and three efficiency cores at 3.10GHz. This setup is supported by a new L2 and L3 cache architecture. MediaTek reports significant efficiency improvements, including a 61% reduction in multi-core power draw and a 40% increase in efficiency for always-on AI tasks compared to the previous-generation Dimensity 9500. Single-core performance has seen a 17% boost, while multi-core performance is up by 15%.

AI and Graphics Capabilities

Central to the 9600 Pro is the new Fusion Architecture, which allows the CPU and the 10th-generation Super Performance NPU 1090 to process AI tasks in parallel. This system is designed to support on-device inference for large language models with up to 30 billion parameters. The chipset also debuts the Mali G2 Ultra NX GPU, which features a third-generation ray-tracing engine. MediaTek claims this provides an 18% improvement in ray-tracing speeds and supports native 1080p resolution for gaming at up to 185fps.

Memory and Imaging Upgrades

To facilitate the high data throughput required for advanced AI and gaming, the Dimensity 9600 Pro introduces support for LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage. The imaging system has also been overhauled, with the new ISP enabling 4K video recording at 240fps for ultra-slow-motion capture and 4K 120fps Cinematic LOG video. The integration of the eNPU 2.0 and a dedicated SensorHub further optimizes power consumption for background AI processes. While MediaTek has not confirmed specific launch partners, industry reports suggest the chipset will likely power upcoming flagship devices such as the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max and the Vivo X500 Pro Max.
