Resident Evil Tops North American Box Office With Franchise-Best $60 Million Debut

Zach Cregger's reboot of Resident Evil delivered a franchise-best domestic debut, pulling in USD 60 million across North American theaters during its opening weekend. Distributed by Sony Pictures, the horror feature played across 3,684 locations in the United States and Canada, according to weekend studio estimates.
The strong opening weekend positions the film as a rare commercial juggernaut for the long-running video game adaptation series, which spans seven prior theatrical entries dating back to 2002. The domestic gross nearly matches the entire theatrical runs of almost every preceding installment in the franchise, with only 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife coming close at USD 60.1 million unadjusted for inflation.

Global Rollout and International Performance

Beyond North America, the feature achieved substantial traction in overseas markets, generating USD 48.3 million internationally to lift its worldwide opening weekend total to USD 108.3 million. Strong international territories included the United Kingdom with USD 5.8 million, Mexico with USD 5.6 million, France with USD 2.6 million, and Germany with USD 2.5 million.
Additional foreign markets contributed notably, including Australia at USD 2.6 million, Spain at USD 2.3 million, and Brazil at USD 2.0 million, alongside smaller initial footprints in Asian territories such as India at USD 1.1 million. Several major foreign markets remain ahead on the release calendar, including Thailand, Japan, and China, leaving approximately 13 percent of the international rollout still to debut.

Director Track Record and Audience Demographics

The project marks a commercial milestone for director Zach Cregger, surpassing the global opening figures of his previous work. Industry tracking from Rentrak highlighted the growing phenomenon of filmmakers becoming major box-office draws in the horror genre.
PostTrak exit polling indicated that the opening weekend audience was predominantly male at 66 percent and under the age of 35 at 75 percent. Critics responded favorably, awarding the picture a 95 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a B+ CinemaScore from moviegoers.

Broader Box Office Landscape

Elsewhere in the top ten, holdover titles continued to accumulate significant totals. Practical Magic 2 captured second place with USD 12.2 million from 4,163 theaters, marking a 59 percent drop from its opening frame and bringing its global running total to USD 76.8 million.
Long-running blockbusters maintained chart positions in their latter weeks of release. Spider-Man: Brand New Day secured third place with USD 6.5 million during its eighth weekend, pushing its domestic cumulative gross to USD 944.5 million and its worldwide haul to approximately USD 2.45 billion. The Odyssey added USD 4.9 million in its tenth weekend to take fourth place, extending its global earnings to an estimated USD 1.7 billion.
