Ilaiyaraaja Marks Golden Jubilee as Marathi Thriller Gondhal Becomes Oscar Entry

Legendary Indian music composer Ilaiyaraaja is celebrating his golden jubilee in cinema as the Marathi psychological thriller Gondhal has been selected as India official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. Announced by the Film Federation of India, the selection marks a historic milestone for the veteran composer, making Gondhal the first film featuring his musical score to represent India in the race for the Oscars.

The Film Federation of India chose the Santosh Davakhar directorial from a competitive field of 33 submitted films. Set in rural Maharashtra, the psychological thriller explores traditional ritualistic practices alongside human relationships and individual aspirations, featuring a cast that includes Ishita Deshmukh, Kishor Kadam, Yogesh Sohoni, Nishad Bhoir, and Anuj Prabhu.

Born R Gnanathesikan in Pannaipuram, Tamil Nadu, Ilaiyaraaja began his cinematic career in 1976 with the release of the Tamil film Annakili. Over the span of five decades, the composer has built an extensive filmography spanning more than 1,000 films across nine languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi. Widely revered by fans and industry peers as the Maestro, his contributions extend beyond commercial cinema into symphonic and classical compositions, most notably his symphonic adaptation of Thiruvasakam.

His long-standing career has earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan in 2018, several National Film Awards, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. The golden jubilee year has been marked by extensive live concert tours across Europe and North America, bringing his expansive catalog to international audiences in cities such as Zurich and London.

The Oscar selection follows prior critical acclaim for Gondhal on the national festival circuit. Director Santosh Davakhar received the Silver Peacock Award for Best Director at the 56th International Film Festival of India in 2025. The film also drew high-profile industry appreciation ahead of its Oscar nomination, with actor Dhanush praising the song Chandan from the soundtrack as a masterpiece from the composer.

Simultaneously, Ilaiyaraaja remains active in contemporary film production. In 2026, he composed the original score for Dorothy, Karthik Subbaraj 10th directorial venture starring Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth. The film received a standing ovation following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
