McLaren Confirms First Performance SUV and In-House Engines in GBP 500 Million UK Overhaul

British supercar manufacturer McLaren has officially confirmed plans to develop its first performance utility vehicle as part of a GBP 500 million, or over Rs 6,400 crore, investment package targeting its domestic manufacturing and engineering infrastructure. Scheduled for launch before 2030, the upcoming vehicle marks a decisive shift away from the mid-engined rear-wheel-drive platform architecture that has characterized the marque's road cars since the introduction of the 12C in 2011.
The capital commitment will fund an entirely new vehicle assembly facility in the United Kingdom, expand current production footprints, and establish in-house manufacturing for engines and gearboxes. According to company projections, the expansion program is expected to generate at least 1,000 direct jobs within McLaren alongside roughly 3,000 additional positions across its domestic supply chain.

Shifting Away from Traditional Supercar Formats

The forthcoming performance utility vehicle represents a structural pivot for McLaren, which previously ruled out entering the utility segment under former leadership. The model will adopt a front-engined layout with either four-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive capabilities, requiring a dedicated production line separate from the Woking assembly plant where its traditional supercars are produced. McLaren Chief Operating Officer Michael Straughan noted that the layout introduces strategic flexibility for future derivative models without immediate plans for additional variants.
Engineering teams are currently evaluating potential body structures for the SUV, including lightweight carbon fibre composites drawn from the company's manufacturing expertise. While luxury performance utility vehicles in the segment typically employ aluminium body structures, deploying carbon fibre would establish an industry precedent for the vehicle class, though a final construction method remains unconfirmed by executives.

Bringing Powertrain Production In-House

For the first time in its modern road-car history, McLaren will independently develop and build its own engines and gearboxes. Since 2011, the company's core models have relied exclusively on V6 and V8 engines supplied by Ricardo from outside Woking. The new proprietary powertrains will support McLaren's hybrid vehicle strategy while being tuned specifically to maintain driver engagement.
Company executives indicated that the new internal powertrain programs will initially evolve from existing V8 architecture while creating capacity for varied cylinder counts and capacities. McLaren's engineering partnership with Ricardo will remain active for separate technical projects, but manufacturing responsibilities for future powertrains will shift entirely in-house.

EV Strategy and Domestic Production Footprint

Despite building technical experience through its integration with Forseven, McLaren has no immediate plans to introduce a fully electric road car. Executives cited softer current market reception for luxury electric vehicles, confirming that the brand will delay an electric vehicle launch until customer demand consolidates across global markets.
The GBP 500 million investment will support several domestic sites, supplementing the primary McLaren Production Centre in Woking, which delivered approximately 2,000 vehicles in 2025. Operations will span the carbon fibre research facility in South Yorkshire, the recently opened design and innovation centre in Bicester, and a dedicated testing and vehicle development site located in the Midlands.
McLaren has not yet disclosed the official name, exact release schedule, or detailed technical specifications for the upcoming performance SUV.
