Land Rover and Stellantis Evaluate Defender Pickup for US Market

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Stellantis are actively evaluating the development of a pickup truck variant of the Land Rover Defender tailored specifically for the United States market. According to recent reports, the exploratory project follows a strategic Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two automotive groups to pursue collaborative product and technology development opportunities across North America.

The initiative represents a potential expansion of the Defender nameplate into North America's highly lucrative, full-size pickup segment. While definitive production decisions and final specifications remain under review, JLR leadership has positioned the United States as a core growth priority requiring bespoke commercial strategies.

The discussions surrounding a Defender-based pickup truck follow a formal partnership agreement finalized between JLR and Stellantis. The MoU is designed to leverage complementary engineering capabilities and product development frameworks across North America. PB Balaji, chief executive officer of JLR, noted that the regional collaboration supports the company's long-term expansion goals. Working with Stellantis allows the British marque to explore joint capabilities in product and technology development that support long-term growth objectives for the US market, Balaji explained.

The Defender SUV lineup currently sold globally is manufactured at JLR's production facility in Nitra, Slovakia. However, industry reporting indicates that any prospective Defender pickup truck would likely be manufactured domestically within the United States. Localizing production would insulate the vehicle from import tariffs and streamline supply chains for the North American market.

JLR executives have previously acknowledged the commercial viability of a pickup variant. Nick Collins, former executive director of vehicle programmes at JLR, stated in 2021 that customer demand exists for such a vehicle and confirmed that a pickup truck can be engineered from a monocoque architecture without fundamental structural limitations.

Despite past assessments, the specific platform for the prospective model remains undecided. JLR retains the Defender monocoque architecture, while Stellantis offers established body-on-frame platforms utilized by truck-focused brands such as Jeep and RAM. Entering the US market would place a Defender pickup in direct competition with entrenched full-size models, including range-topping variants of the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and RAM 1500.

Comprehensive project details, including platform selection, manufacturing footprints, and technical specifications, are anticipated to emerge toward the end of 2026. JLR has emphasized that the Defender pickup is slated to be one of several exclusive vehicle offerings planned for North America as part of its wider regional strategy.
