Kia Opens Pre-Bookings for Carens CNG and Carnival Hybrid in India

Kia India has officially commenced pre-bookings across its national dealer network for three new powertrain additions to its multi-purpose vehicle lineup, introducing factory-fitted compressed natural gas options for the Carens and Carens Clavis along with a strong-hybrid variant for the flagship Carnival Limousine. First previewed during the automaker's Inspiration Day event, the new variants represent Kia's initial entry into India's factory-fitted CNG vehicle market and expand its electrified portfolio at the upper end of the premium MPV segment. Official pricing for all three variants will be announced at a later date closer to their respective market launches.

The introduction of factory-engineered CNG models addresses rising consumer demand for lower operational costs, moving away from previous dealer-level conversions. Simultaneously, the addition of a strong-hybrid setup on the Carnival Limousine+ trim offers an energy-efficient alternative alongside the existing 2.2-litre diesel engine. By targeting both private car buyers and commercial fleet operators, Kia aims to consolidate its multi-purpose vehicle market presence against established domestic and international competitors in India.

The flagship Kia Carnival Limousine Hybrid integrates a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine sourced from the global Sorento, paired with a six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. While the gasoline unit delivers 180 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque, Kia has integrated a higher-output electric motor generating 73.4 horsepower and 304 Nm of torque. This reflects an increase of 8.4 horsepower and 40 Nm over the electric motor employed in the Sorento hybrid setup, providing full electric assistance under load and low-speed electric driving without requiring external plug-in charging.

The hybrid assembly will co-exist alongside the existing 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, which produces 193 horsepower and comes mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. To support aerodynamic efficiency and electrical operation, the Carnival Hybrid features active air flaps behind its tiger-face front grille, along with 18-inch crystal-cut dual-tone aero alloy wheels. A specialized Virtual Engine Sound System has also been incorporated to emit low-speed acoustic warnings when operating in silent electric driving mode.

Offered exclusively in the top-tier Limousine+ trim, the Carnival Hybrid retains the core design language of its diesel counterpart, including vertically stacked LED headlights, signature daytime running lights, powered rear sliding doors, and connected LED tail-lamps. The tailgate receives a distinct HEV emblem to denote the strong-hybrid powertrain beneath. The interior layout remains centred on dual 12.3-inch display screens for driver information and infotainment, accompanied by a three-zone climate control system and a 12-speaker Bose audio setup.

New comfort features added to the hybrid variant include retractable, height-adjustable seat-back tables fitted with integrated wireless smartphone chargers and cup holders. The cabin incorporates monotone ambient lighting, leatherette-wrapped door trims, and a Smart Pure Air Purifier complete with an active Air Quality Index display screen. Safety provisions comprise eight airbags, Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems, all-wheel disc brakes, and a 360-degree surround view camera system.

Marking Kia's first factory-installed CNG implementation in the Indian automotive market, the Carens CNG and Carens Clavis CNG replace previous dealer-fitted aftermarket installations. Both vehicles utilize a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre G1.5 petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Under CNG operation, the powertrain generates 93 horsepower and 123 Nm of torque, reflecting a reduction of 22 horsepower and 21 Nm compared to the standard gasoline calibration.

To accommodate the factory-installed 60-litre CNG cylinder positioned beneath the rear boot floor, Kia engineers re-calibrated the engine electronics, adjusted the suspension geometry, and updated the front disc brake setup. The 60-litre tank reduces available luggage space to 116 litres with all three seating rows active, while an underbody spare wheel mounting is retained. Mechanical changes include 16-inch wheels and a structural modification to the third-row seat-back frame to deliver a wider recline angle for passenger comfort.

Kia has structured its CNG lineup to serve both private retail customers and commercial transport operators through dedicated trim configurations. For individual buyers, the Carens Clavis CNG will be available in base-spec HTE and HTE(O) trims, while the Carens CNG is offered in a single Premium(O) specification. Driver interface updates include a dash-mounted CNG fuel change switch for real-time fuel toggling and a 4.2-inch colour TFT display that presents dedicated CNG distance-to-empty calculations.

Commercial fleet buyers are targeted with distinct variant designations: the Carens CNG M-Drive and the Carens Clavis CNG HTM. Equipment levels on private base trims include an eight-inch touchscreen system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rear-view camera, six speakers, steering-mounted controls, electric outer mirrors, semi-leatherette upholstery, and keyless entry. The commercial trims streamline these convenience features while maintaining identical mechanical components and CNG calibration.

The release of factory-fitted CNG variants places Kia directly into a growing alternative-fuel sector in India, where CNG emerged as the second most preferred fuel choice after petrol during fiscal year 2026. The market segment has historically been dominated by Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai, with additional competitors like Nissan and Renault preparing factory CNG entries. Kia's factory integration guarantees full vehicle warranty coverage and standardized calibration compared to third-party conversions.

In the premium MPV category, the Carnival Hybrid enters a market segment where the diesel Limousine+ is currently priced at Rs 59.65 lakh ex-showroom. The hybrid model is anticipated to command a price premium over its diesel counterpart, providing a cleaner alternative for luxury buyers facing regional restrictions on diesel vehicles.

Kia India has confirmed that authorized dealerships are actively taking customer reservations for all three models. Final ex-showroom pricing, certified fuel economy metrics for the CNG variants, and official mileage figures for the Carnival Limousine Hybrid will be announced during the formal market launch in the coming weeks. Deliveries across nationwide touchpoints are scheduled to follow immediately after price disclosures.
