Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is fundamentally pivoting its Indian market approach by developing two purpose-built, localized models internally codenamed VF X and VF Y. The strategic shift follows the company's decision to suspend planned local manufacturing for several of its global vehicle models due to high production costs. According to industry disclosures, VinFast is initiating conversations with Indian component suppliers at the earliest design phase to iron out cost structures and supply constraints. VinFast suspended plans in July to locally manufacture three of its primary global electric vehicles in India, namely the VF 3, VF 6, and VF 7 models. Despite adjusting its product roadmap, VinFast continues to build out its physical manufacturing infrastructure in India. Since commencing retail operations in September 2025, the automaker has sold approximately 10,000 vehicles in the country. Its current assembly plant operates with an initial capacity of 50,000 units per year, and the company has already received investment approval for a second-phase expansion that will elevate total factory capacity to 150,000 vehicles annually.
