Serbia's Vucic Announces Resignation to Run for Prime Minister

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced he will step down from his post on September 27 to campaign for prime minister in an upcoming snap general election scheduled for October 25. Vucic, a populist leader who has held executive power as either president or prime minister for 12 years, stated during a television appearance that he would take part in the electoral race as an ordinary citizen.

The political shift follows nearly two years of sustained student-led anti-corruption demonstrations across Serbia. The unrest was originally sparked by a tragic railway station roof collapse that killed 16 people in the northern city of Novi Sad in November 2024. Demonstrators and opposition parties have consistently accused Vucic and his administration of entrenched corruption and exerting strict control over national media outlets, allegations that government officials deny.

On Monday evening, thousands of opposition supporters gathered in central Belgrade to back parliamentary candidates representing the Students Win movement, which has emerged as a primary political vehicle for the protesters. Candidates formally submitted certified supporter signatures to secure their places on the October ballot. Several established opposition entities, including the Democratic Party and the Kreni Promeni Movement, have pledged their support directly to the student coalition and confirmed they will not field separate candidates.

At the Belgrade rally, participants waved Serbian flags and chanted slogans supporting the movement. Stefan Lukic, a student attendee, articulated the core motivation of the demonstrations. We, as students, want to reset the system and start everything from the beginning, so that institutions can do their jobs, Lukic said.

Vucic previously indicated an intention to step down in June but omitted a definitive timetable at that time. Confirming the updated timeline on Pink TV, Vucic noted that he would formally address the nation on the evening of September 27 to express gratitude for public support following his resignation.

Following his departure from the presidency, Vucic outlined plans for an extensive nationwide campaign tour. Describing his logistical preparations, Vucic stated that he purchased a small truck and a caravan to reach remote rural communities and municipalities he has not previously visited during his tenure.

I also bought a small truck, and I have my own car, Vucic said. I bought a caravan as well because I will not be able to sleep everywhere. I will go to the most remote villages, and if I stay late, I will remain there.

the ruling Serbian Progressive Party plans to stage major metropolitan rallies, particularly in the capital of Belgrade. Vucic expressed confidence that his party would secure an outright majority exceeding 50 percent of the vote in the October 25 general election.
