WhatsApp for Android Tests Scrollable Chat Previews and Quick Actions
Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is actively developing a native chat preview functionality for its Android application, allowing users to inspect recent messages without opening conversations. According to feature tracking reports from WABetaInfo, the upcoming capability replicates and enhances an interface capability that has existed on Apple's iOS ecosystem for several years. The capability enables smartphone owners to discreetly review incoming text exchanges without notifying senders or triggering read receipts.
Long-Press Mechanics and Scrollable Preview Architecture
Under the current Android implementation, performing a long-press gesture on a conversation thread simply selects the dialogue and displays quick actions such as pin, archive, mute, and delete across the top app bar. The forthcoming update restructures this interaction by generating a floating preview window positioned directly above a refreshed contextual action menu. Importantly, technical testing indicates that the Android preview window supports vertical scrolling, enabling users to read through extensive message histories. This scrollable architecture marks an improvement over the existing iOS implementation, which restricts preview interactions to a static glimpse of the most recent text bubbles. This scrollable browsing capability is particularly useful when someone sends multiple messages or an extended conversation requires attention. Note that while WhatsApp already allows individuals to turn off read receipts, the setting does not apply to group communications. The new floating preview overlay permits users to secretly read new messages without turning off read receipts across the entire platform. WhatsApp previously released media thumbnail previews in the chat list for Android beta build 2.26.32.11, according to WABetaInfo. Contextual chat previews were spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android build 2.26.44.11 update on the Google Play Store, according to WABetaInfo.
Contextual Menu Controls and Privacy Management
Positioned immediately below the floating preview, a redesigned contextual menu organizes commonly used conversation actions in one place. Users can quickly pin chats, archive conversations, mute notifications, mark messages as unread, or delete dialogues. A separate expanded options partition provides additional controls, including locking the chat, adding conversations to customized lists, viewing chat info, and creating home screen shortcuts. The feature remains under active development and is not yet accessible for public beta testing.
Broader Platform Features and External Event Invites
Separately, WhatsApp has introduced expanded event management capabilities allowing organizers to coordinate gatherings with individuals who do not have the messenger installed. Through a centralized interface designated as Events Home, users can create functions, distribute invitation links, and track participant responses. WhatsApp says users can view a complete roster of past and upcoming events by navigating to Settings and selecting Events. The event system conceals personal phone numbers from unfamiliar guests, while invitees without the app see the venue address only after confirming their attendance.
Background
Meta reported that daily active people across its Family of applications averaged 3.64 billion in September 2026.
The updated Events feature lets hosts configure custom reminders and provide guests the option to bring a plus one, according to The Times of India.
