Mazama Energy Secures $135M to Advance Super-Hot Rock Geothermal Drilling
Geothermal startup Mazama Energy has closed an oversubscribed $135 million Series B funding round to commercialize deep-drilling technology capable of tapping super-hot rock formations. The round was led by Centaurus Capital and Doerr Capital, with continued backing from prominent venture firms and energy corporations as investors seek reliable 24/7 power sources for artificial intelligence data centers.
The fresh capital will support the engineering and deployment of horizontal wells designed to reach depths of approximately 15,000 feet. Mazama reported that it has already bored past 10,000 feet in 15 days during operations at its initial development site in Oregon.
Tapping Super-Hot Rock for High-Capacity Power
Unlike traditional geothermal installations that rely on shallow natural steam vents or volcanic activity, enhanced geothermal systems target deep, impermeable rock formations. By drilling three miles underground, Mazama accesses temperatures exceeding 750 degrees Fahrenheit, or 400 degrees Celsius.
At these extreme depths and high pressures, injected water transforms into a supercritical fluid that exhibits properties of both liquid and gas, allowing it to absorb substantially more thermal energy than ordinary steam. The company estimates that each completed well can continuously generate 15 megawatts of electricity around the clock, providing output roughly ten times higher than conventional geothermal facilities.
Powering Data Centers Amid Grid Pressures
Enhanced geothermal startups are emerging as viable contenders to supply carbon-free electricity for power-hungry technology infrastructure, including AI data centers. Traditional renewable sources like wind and solar introduce grid intermittency challenges, whereas deep-rock geothermal systems offer continuous baseload generation.
Investor Vinod Khosla, whose firm Khosla Ventures incubated Mazama Energy and participated in the current round, has previously characterized enhanced geothermal as a critical technology for scaling clean energy. The sector has attracted growing interest from tech conglomerates seeking reliable zero-emission power alternatives to natural gas.
Scaling Commercial Sites and Regional Potential
Mazama plans to commence commercial electricity generation at its Oregon location next year, targeting a total capacity of 200 megawatts by 2030. The company has also secured land for a second development site to expand its operational footprint across the western United States.
Industry researchers note that tapping just one percent of global super-hot rock resources could theoretically unlock massive amounts of electricity. While engineering hurdles remain regarding equipment durability under extreme thermal stress, the recent capital infusion will fund advanced reservoir engineering and specialized drilling equipment required to prove commercial viability at scale.
