IIT Guwahati and Tata Electronics Partner to Establish Semiconductor Packaging Centre of Excellence

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and Tata Electronics Private Limited executed a memorandum of understanding to construct an on-campus Centre of Excellence dedicated to semiconductor packaging, according to reporting by ET Education. The institutional partnership prioritizes industry-aligned instruction, skills development, and collaborative research covering semiconductor assembly, testing, marking, and packaging. Under the bilateral framework, the premier technical institute will direct the curriculum design and academic delivery of diploma-level instruction and undergraduate BTech engineering pathways, The Indian Express reported. Course materials and technical training modules will be constructed jointly with Tata Electronics to furnish students with direct exposure to back-end fabrication processes.
Curriculum Structure and Back-End Packaging Exposure
The specialized curriculum focuses on the back-end stages of microelectronics manufacturing, where fabricated semiconductor chips undergo packaging, thermal verification, testing, and functional marking prior to commercial delivery, Elets Technomedia noted. Undergraduate and postgraduate researchers will access opportunities to conduct joint investigative research examining advanced microchip packaging architectures, assembly methodologies, and quality verification technologies. Selected students enrolled in the academic programs will also participate in hands-on technical internships and industrial training at Tata Electronics production units, EdexLive reported. The Centre of Excellence will function as the operational nucleus for all joint instructional modules and collaborative technical research undertakings.
On February 29, 2024, the Government of India approved a proposal by Tata Electronics to build a greenfield semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam, according to Tata Electronics.
Regional Institutional Outreach Across Northeast India
The educational initiative is structured to expand access to semiconductor learning across technical institutions situated throughout Assam and the Northeast, ET Education noted. The partnering organizations plan to select engineering colleges, regional universities, and polytechnics to integrate their student bodies into practical microelectronics instruction. Faculty members from participating regional institutes will receive specialized instructor training to strengthen semiconductor teaching capacity within their home departments, The Indian Express reported. The distributed educational network seeks to cultivate a localized talent pipeline capable of supporting India's expanding domestic semiconductor manufacturing ambitions.
Formal Agreement Signing and Leadership Vision
The formal agreement was signed on the institute's campus by IIT Guwahati Dean of Research and Development Rohit Sinha and Tata Electronics Chief Human Resources Officer Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, according to a joint release reported by electronics.economictimes.indiatimes.com. IIT Guwahati Director Professor Devendra Jalihal observed that the collaboration will connect academic bodies, industrial leaders, and students through practical education, applied training, and joint research. Jalihal explained that establishing industry-linked training across regional institutions will broaden student access to technical instruction and reinforce local workforce development. The institutional partnership reflects national efforts to address rising industrial demand for packaging engineers and assembly technicians across domestic fabrication hubs.
