Canon Unveils EOS R8 Mark II With In-Body Stabilization and Multi-Controller

Canon has officially announced the EOS R8 Mark II, introducing 5-axis in-body image stabilization and a dedicated multi-controller joystick to its entry-level full-frame mirrorless lineup. Built around a familiar 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC X processor, the new camera addresses the two most common user requests from the 2023 original by adding stabilization and improved physical handling while maintaining a compact form factor.
The body is scheduled to ship in late October 2026 with an estimated retail price of $1,899 USD for the body alone, or $2,099 USD when bundled with the RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens. Canon is also releasing companion hardware and software, including the EG-E2 Extension Grip priced at $99.99 USD and the updated Speedlite EL-5 Ver.2 flash priced at $379 USD, alongside a free Windows application designed to process depth data.

5-Axis In-Body Stabilization Arrives

The most substantial hardware addition is the integration of a 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilizer, a feature entirely absent from the first-generation R8. Canon rates the new stabilization system up to 7.5 stops at the center and 7.0 stops at the periphery, incorporating Coordinated Control with lens-based stabilization and Peripheral Coordinated Control to mitigate edge blur on wide-angle lenses.
This stabilization capability allows handheld shooting in lower light conditions without forcing photographers to raise ISO settings or carry a tripod. Despite housing the stabilization unit, the camera body remains lightweight, measuring approximately 499 grams body-only and 546 grams with a battery and card inserted, making it Canon's lightest EOS body equipped with in-body image stabilization to date.

Autofocus Upgrades and 40 FPS Continuous Shooting

The EOS R8 Mark II adopts Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system enhanced with deep learning subject detection for people, animals, and vehicles, operating in illumination levels down to EV -7.5. The tracking suite includes Register People Priority, which allows operators to store up to 10 faces in-camera or 100 on a memory card to maintain focus on specific subjects in crowded environments.
For continuous capture, the electronic shutter delivers up to 40 frames per second, supported by a buffer capacity of up to 73 RAW files or 190 JPEGs. The system also introduces pre-continuous shooting in H+ mode, buffering approximately half a second of frames before the shutter button is fully depressed to help capture unpredictable action.

Ergonomic Refinements and Video Enhancements

Handling receives a notable update through the addition of a physical multi-controller joystick, giving operators a direct method for moving focus points that the previous iteration lacked. The electronic viewfinder retains a 2.36 million-dot OLED panel, paired with a 1.62 million-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD.
On the video front, the camera records uncropped 4K video at up to 60p oversampled from 6K, alongside Full HD slow motion up to 180fps. Internal recording supports professional profiles including Canon Log 3, HLG, and HDR PQ across multiple 10-bit and 8-bit codecs, while connectivity adds Wi-Fi 6 and USB-C livestreaming capabilities alongside a single UHS-II SD card slot.

Dual Pixel 3D and Launch Accessories

Canon is introducing a proprietary feature named Dual Pixel 3D, making the R8 Mark II the first camera capable of capturing JPEGs embedded with depth data. A complimentary Windows software utility, the Dual Pixel 3D Converter, enables users to transform these files into standalone 3D images, isolated 3D models, or short 3D video clips.
Alongside the camera body and lenses, Canon confirmed that the EG-E2 Extension Grip and Speedlite EL-5 Ver.2 flash will launch in late October 2026. The extension grip is engineered to improve ergonomics for larger hands without obstructing the battery door or tripod mount, while the updated flash offers extended wireless communication range.
