Apple Begins Global Rollout of iOS 27 Featuring Revamped Siri AI and iPhone Handoff

Apple is rolling out iOS 27 globally, introducing a comprehensive suite of interface refinements, expanded device capabilities, and a heavily revamped Siri experience powered by Apple Intelligence and Google Gemini. The major software update reaches compatible devices worldwide, including an anticipated release time of approximately 10:30 PM IST in India. Alongside system-wide performance boosts, the software delivers deep integration for personal context retrieval, expanded visual intelligence tools, and innovative carrier services such as iPhone Handoff.

The global deployment follows extensive public and developer beta testing phases that began earlier in the year. While newly announced flagship hardware, including the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and the foldable iPhone Duo, ship with iOS 27 pre-installed out of the box, the software maintains backward compatibility with older generations stretching back to the iPhone 11 series and second-generation iPhone SE units. However, advanced machine learning capabilities and the newly introduced Siri AI require hardware constraints starting from the iPhone 15 Pro and newer.

The centerpiece of the iOS 27 release is a major overhaul of the default digital assistant, rebranded around Siri AI. Built upon a combination of Apple Foundation Models and Google Gemini models, the revamped assistant is designed to process complex, multi-step queries that traditionally challenged earlier iterations. Users can invoke the assistant through a dedicated Siri app or by holding the iPhone physical side button, enabling deep on-screen awareness and cross-application workflows.

The assistant draws directly upon stored personal information and contextual cues visible across active applications. Apple confirmed that Siri AI is initially restricted to English-language prompts and will operate under daily usage limits, with expanded future access tied to potential fee structures. Regional availability is also staggered, as regulatory disputes with the European Commission prevent initial deployment across the EU for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and watchOS 27.

Among the novel connectivity features is iPhone Handoff, allowing users to actively switch a single active phone number and cellular line between two distinct iPhones running the same Apple ID. The system synchronizes active calls, text messages, voicemail data, and Find My location sharing dynamically as the active device switches.

The functionality requires active carrier cooperation and infrastructure support. T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany are serving as launch partners for the service, with T-Mobile pricing the capability at five dollars per month. Additional carriers, including Verizon in the U.S. and EE in the United Kingdom, have committed to introducing the feature before the conclusion of the year.

Meditations on user interface design continue through refinements to the Liquid Glass paradigm initially debuted in the previous major OS cycle. Apple implemented adjustments providing more uniform light refraction, sharper icons, and enhanced visual contrast alongside a dedicated slider allowing users to manually calibrate the transparency and tint intensity of interface overlays.

Visual Intelligence features are simultaneously expanded across the operating system. Users can interact with the iPhone camera app to scan objects, analyze real-time surroundings, and extract on-screen data programmatically. Additional utilities include Apple Cash integration for automatic bill splitting via receipt scanning in the camera and messages interface, custom duration controls for location sharing in Find My, and CarPlay support for video browsing applications while parked.
