Spain Extends World Cup-Winning Coach Luis de la Fuente Through 2032

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has officially extended the contract of national team head coach Luis de la Fuente through 2032. The agreement, ratified by the federation's board of directors on Monday, adds four years to his previous deal and secures his leadership through the 2028 and 2032 European Championships, as well as the 2030 World Cup. The extension follows a period of unprecedented success for the Spanish senior side under his management.

De la Fuente took charge of the senior national team at the end of 2022, succeeding Luis Enrique following Spain's round of 16 exit at the Qatar World Cup. Since his appointment, he has overseen a transformation in the team's international performance, securing three major titles: the 2023 UEFA Nations League, the 2024 European Championship, and the 2026 World Cup. The 2026 World Cup victory, achieved after a final win against Argentina in New Jersey this July, marked Spain's second world title and contributed to a record 38-match unbeaten streak.

Before his promotion to the senior squad, De la Fuente spent over a decade within the RFEF structure, coaching various youth teams. His tenure at the youth level included winning the European Under-19 and Under-21 Championships, alongside a silver medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan. RFEF board chairman Rafael Louzan described the extension as a recognition of De la Fuente's long-term contribution to the federation, calling him the most successful head coach in the history of the national team.

Spain is set to return to competitive action this week, marking the team's first matches since their World Cup triumph. The upcoming international window includes four UEFA Nations League fixtures, beginning with a match against England at Wembley on September 26. The team will subsequently face Croatia in Seville on September 29, host the Czech Republic in Oviedo on October 3, and conclude the window with an away fixture against Croatia on October 6. The new contract ensures that De la Fuente remains at the helm as Spain prepares to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Morocco and Portugal.

De la Fuente's win rate closely rivals Vicente del Bosque's percentage while surpassing several former managers. Cross-border logistics between the three principal host nations combine high-speed rail connections from Spain to Portugal with Strait of Gibraltar maritime ferry corridors and shuttle flights connecting Andalusia to northern Morocco.
