Praggnanandhaa Outwits Anish Giri as India Men Dominate Netherlands at Chess Olympiad

Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa secured his first victory of the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand on Sunday, leading the Indian men's team to a decisive 3.0-1.0 win over the Netherlands. The victory, which extended India's winning streak to five rounds, saw Praggnanandhaa defeat Dutch number one Anish Giri on the top board in a long, grinding encounter that began as a Ruy Lopez. While Praggnanandhaa had previously managed only three draws in his opening assignments, his tactical precision in the rook and minor-piece endgame proved decisive against Giri.

The Indian men's team lineup saw a notable tactical adjustment, with Praggnanandhaa taking the top board while world champion Dommaraju Gukesh played on the fourth board. The strategy yielded results, as Gukesh defeated Erwin L'Ami to secure his fourth win in five rounds. Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin contributed solid draws on the second and third boards, respectively, against Jorden Van Foreest and Loek Van Wely. In contrast to the men's success, the Indian women's team suffered a 1.5-2.5 defeat against Poland, marking their third consecutive loss to the Polish side in Olympiad history. Vaishali Rameshbabu, playing white in a London System, was defeated by IM Aleksandra Maltsevskaya after a complex struggle involving opposite-wing castling and a decisive breakthrough on the seventh rank. Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh, and Vantika Agrawal all drew their respective games, leaving the team to look ahead to a challenging upcoming match against the USA.

Following the successful pressure test against the Netherlands, the Indian men's team faces a significant challenge in the sixth round against host nation Uzbekistan. The Uzbek side, featuring top players Javokhir Sindarov and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, remains one of the tournament favorites. The Indian squad is currently preparing for this encounter as they continue their defense of the gold medal.
