Seema Kumari Claims Historic 10,000m Bronze at Asian Games 2026

Indian long-distance runner Seema Kumari secured a bronze medal in the women's 10,000m event at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya on Thursday, clocking a time of 32:50.05. The podium finish successfully concluded India's 16-year drought in the distance event at the continental games and delivered the nation's opening athletics medal of the current games.

For the Asian Games 2026, the Athletics Federation of India mandated that athletes compete in a minimum of three domestic competitions, including state championships, to earn selection. Meanwhile, the women's 10,000 meters was introduced to the Olympic programme at the 1988 Games.

Bahrain's Winfred Yavi claimed the gold medal with a time of 32:39.18, while Japan's Nozomi Tanaka earned silver after finishing in 32:41.54. Seema's performance placed her more than 13 seconds ahead of Kazakhstan's Daisy Jepkemei, who crossed the finish line fourth in 33:03.21.

Seema remained among the leading group through the early stages of the tactical race as the competitors maintained a steady rhythm. As the race progressed into its concluding laps, Yavi and Tanaka surged ahead to contest the gold and silver medals in a sprint finish.

Maintaining her composure, the 25-year-old athlete from Himachal Pradesh successfully defended her position and pulled clear of the chasing pack in the closing straight. Her tactical discipline ensured a comfortable margin over fourth-place Jepkemei, securing the historic third-place finish.

The bronze medal marks only the third time an Indian woman has reached the podium in the 10,000m event at the Asian Games. The country's previous medals in the discipline came at the 2010 Guangzhou edition, where Preeja Sreedharan captured gold and Kavita Raut claimed silver.

Seema's achievement also provided a vital boost to India's track and field contingent following a challenging opening day in Nagoya. The athletics squad subsequently built on the momentum by securing a silver medal in the mixed 4x400m relay event.

Born on January 10, 2001, Seema has established herself across continental and global competitions in both the 5,000m and 10,000m disciplines. Her upward trajectory included a personal best of 32:02.43 at The TEN meeting in California in March 2026, where she finished fifth against a competitive international field.

Earlier in the season, she secured the 10,000m title at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships. Her resume also features a senior women's title at the 2024 Asian Cross Country Championships and a silver medal in the 5,000m at the 2025 FISU World University Games.

Following her podium finish in Nagoya, Seema holds a World Athletics ranking of 110 in the 10,000m and 149 in the 5,000m. The athletics federation will look to build upon the medal-winning performances as competition continues across remaining track and field events at the 2026 Asian Games.

The standard 10,000-metre track competition comprises 25 laps around a 400-meter track and represents the longest standard track running discipline. In prior continental competitions, Winfred Yavi secured gold medals in both the 1500 meters and the 3000 meters steeplechase.
