Roshibina Devi Secures Silver as India Claims Multiple Medals on Day 5 of Asian Games
Indian wushu practitioner Naorem Roshibina Devi clinched the silver medal in the women's 60kg sanda event at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Thursday, falling short against China's Zhang Xiaoyu in the final. Roshibina's podium finish marks her third consecutive medal at the continental games, following a silver in Hangzhou in 2023 and a bronze in Jakarta-Palembang in 2018, establishing a historic milestone for Indian wushu.
Rowing events at the multi-sport quadrennial gathering were hosted at the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course in Aisai and Kaizu. In hockey, historical head-to-head records show India has maintained a strong unbeaten streak against South Korea following a shootout loss in 2019.
Her silver contributed to a productive fifth day of competition for the Indian contingent, which saw simultaneous medal successes across rowing, shooting, and strong progression in team sports. India's overall medal count rose to 14, comprising one gold, six silver, and seven bronze medals, keeping the delegation active across multiple disciplines at the multi-sport quadrennial event.
Rowing and Shooting Medals Add to Tally
Indian athletes expanded the medal count on the water and at the shooting range. Satnam Singh and Salman Khan secured a bronze medal in the men's double sculls final, clocking 6:13.25 to finish behind gold medallists Yi Xudi and Nie Yide of China and silver medallists Mekhrojbek Mamatkulov and Pavel Sorin. The Indian pair maintained strong positioning at intermediate splits before securing the third-place finish.
At the shooting ranges, Anant Jeet Singh Naruka and Parinaaz Dhaliwal added a bronze in the mixed team skeet event. The pair finished third with a score of 44 points in the final, finishing level with South Korea but taking the bronze on countback based on higher qualification rankings.
Hockey Dominance and Combat Sports Results
The Indian men's hockey team maintained its unbeaten run in Pool A with an emphatic 8-2 victory over South Korea. In-form striker Dilpreet Singh fired a hat-trick, while Abhishek added two goals to anchor the commanding display. The win follows earlier group-stage routs against Indonesia and Sri Lanka, reinforcing India's standing at the top of the pool.
Sanda competitions consist of three rounds, where competitors earn points from sideline judges for successful techniques. Two points are awarded if a fighter strikes the head or torso using a valid leg technique, or if the opponent falls down while the attacker remains standing.
Combat disciplines delivered mixed outcomes. In boxing, Parveen advanced to the women's 65kg quarterfinals via walkover after Tajikistan's Malika Nozimova withdrew. However, compatriot Sakshi Chaudhary exited in the 51kg round of 16 following a tight 2-3 split-decision defeat to Kazakhstan's Alua Balkibekova, while Sumit Kundu was forced to concede his 70kg bout against Iraq's Ali Qasim Hamdan Al-Sarray due to injury.
Racquet Sports and Qualification Milestones
Squash and table tennis competitors advanced deep into the tournament brackets. In squash, Abhay Singh and Veer Chotrani reached the men's singles quarterfinals alongside women's contenders Anahat Singh and Tanvi Khanna. In table tennis, the mixed doubles pair of Diya Chitale and Manush Shah continued their strong form following convincing preliminary wins.
The men's kabaddi team also capped off a perfect group stage campaign by defeating Chinese Taipei 37-21, securing top spot in Group A and advancing directly to the semifinals. Competition across athletics and other individual events continues through the week as the contingent pursues its broader target counts.
