Pragyan Ojha Leads Selection Panel as India Plans New Zealand Tour
Former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha has assumed the role of interim head of the national selection committee following the departure of Ajit Agarkar. Ojha is currently leading a four-member panel tasked with finalizing India's squads for the upcoming multi-format tour of New Zealand, which spans from October 22 to November 27. The committee, alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir, held a significant strategy session in Guwahati on the eve of the second ODI against the West Indies to align on selection priorities and player workload management.
According to Rediff Cricket, for Indian Cricket Team Management, Test specialists will be released early from white-ball duties to play Ranji Trophy matches for Punjab and Karnataka before flying to Wellington. According to CREX, for BCCI, Pragyan Ojha met with head coach Gautam Gambhir in Guwahati to coordinate New Zealand tour selections, with Parthiv Patel shortlisted for the permanent post.
Ranji Trophy Preparation Mandate
In a strategic move to prepare for the two-Test series against New Zealand starting November 19, the team management has reached a consensus to mandate domestic red-ball participation for Test hopefuls. Players are expected to feature in the Ranji Trophy, which commences on October 11, to build necessary match volume. Captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain KL Rahul are slated to participate in at least one group stage fixture for Punjab and Karnataka, respectively, subject to medical clearance.
According to Cricket Australia, for Cricket Australia / BCCI, BCCI's red-ball mandate mirrors Cricket Australia's system requiring centrally contracted Test stars to play Sheffield Shield rounds ahead of major Test series.
Previously, former India opener Shiv Sundar Das served as interim selection committee chairman as the senior-most member. Additionally, the BCCI previously omitted Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from annual retainerships after they did not play domestic red-ball cricket despite fitness.
Workload Management for Key Bowlers
Management is placing a specific emphasis on the preparation of the fast-bowling core, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar, Prasidh Krishna, Auqib Nabi, and Akash Deep. For Bumrah, the team is evaluating options to ensure he gains sufficient red-ball experience before the Test series, with potential participation in a Ranji Trophy fixture for Gujarat or an India A match during the shadow tour that begins October 24. Akash Deep, who has returned to the setup, will be monitored closely starting with the Irani Cup in Srinagar, while all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is being tracked for his bowling contributions to balance the playing XI.
Selection Committee Transition
While Ojha currently chairs the committee, the long-term leadership remains in flux. Reports indicate that Parthiv Patel is a frontrunner to replace Agarkar as the permanent chairman representing the West Zone, though formal confirmation is pending. The current panel, comprising Shiv Sundar Das, Ajay Ratra, and R P Singh, is also tasked with selecting squads for the India A shadow tour, which runs concurrently with the senior team's T20I and ODI commitments in New Zealand.
