Mohit Sharma Joins Chennai Super Kings as Bowling Coach for IPL 2027
Former India pacer Mohit Sharma is set to join the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as the franchise's new bowling coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The 38-year-old, who retired from all forms of professional cricket in December 2025, will replace Eric Simmons in the role. This appointment marks the first major addition to the support staff assembled by newly appointed head coach Zaheer Khan.
According to International Olympic Committee (Olympics.com), for Indian Premier League Champions, Following CSK's 2023 victory, Kolkata Knight Riders won the 2024 IPL title, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru won consecutive championships in 2025 and 2026.
Chief Executive Officer Kasi Viswanathan verified that head coach Zaheer Khan put forward Mohit for the role.
A Return to Familiar Ground
Mohit Sharma shares a significant history with the Chennai-based franchise, having represented the team in 48 Indian Premier League matches across four seasons. His association with the club also includes 10 appearances during the now-defunct Champions League T20. The move signals a reunion between the former pacer and the organization during a period of structural transition for the team.
According to The Indian Express, cSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the development to Cricbuzz, noting that Zaheer Khan is currently in the process of finalizing his support staff. The appointment comes as the franchise seeks to reverse a period of decline; after securing their fifth IPL title in 2023, the team has failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. This performance slump led to the departure of long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming earlier this year.
Ongoing Support Staff Restructuring
While the bowling coach position is now filled, the franchise continues to evaluate candidates for other roles, including the batting coach. Michael Hussey, who previously served in the coaching setup and was considered a contender for the head coach position, remains a figure of interest, though the team is reportedly in discussions with three or four potential candidates for the batting role. Further announcements regarding the complete support staff are expected in the coming weeks as the team prepares for the 2027 campaign under Zaheer Khan's leadership.
Assistant coaches Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are anticipated to remain with the team as the support staff is finalized.
