New Zealand All-Rounder Rachin Ravindra Suffers Shoulder Injury, Doubtful for India T20Is

New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra has sustained a dislocated right shoulder during a promotional shoot in Auckland, casting significant doubt over his availability for the upcoming five-match T20I series against India. The left-hander was injured on Wednesday after landing awkwardly on a safety mat while attempting a diving catch during commercial filming.

Medical specialists evaluated the injury on Friday, confirming that Ravindra avoided major structural damage. However, New Zealand Cricket officials noted that his eventual return to competitive cricket remains contingent upon his response to rehabilitation over the coming weeks. The five-match series against India is scheduled to commence on October 22 in Christchurch, with national selectors expected to name the squad next week.

The mishap occurred during an approved promotional activity with Sky in Auckland. New Zealand's Performance Manager Mike Sandle explained that safety protocols were observed during the shoot, describing the incident as an unavoidable accident while expressing disappointment for the player.

"It was a really unfortunate injury. We're gutted for Rachin and our key priority is making sure he recovers well and gets back on the field as soon as he can," Sandle said. "As with all commercial shoots involving our players, the activities were agreed in advance by all parties, with appropriate safety measures in place. It was a bit of a freak accident, and we'll continue to review our processes around events like this in the future."

Initial medical scans performed on Friday ruled out severe structural injury to the shoulder joint. Nevertheless, team management has opted against establishing a definitive return date, emphasizing that his recovery timeline will depend entirely on how he handles the initial weeks of rehabilitation.

Ravindra has cemented himself as an integral component of New Zealand's limited-overs lineup. Across 52 T20 international appearances, he has accumulated 759 runs with a top score of 69, alongside 26 wickets that include career-best figures of 4 for 27.

Head coach Rob Walter stressed that the team management intends to manage the all-rounder's recovery conservatively, citing a demanding upcoming Test calendar. New Zealand faces an extensive sequence of red-ball fixtures over the subsequent six months, making caution paramount in his rehabilitation.

"With a heavy schedule of Test cricket in the next six months, we don't want to rush Rachin back sooner than we need to. He's in great hands in terms of his rehab and we look forward to welcoming him back soon," Walter said.

Following the conclusion of the five T20Is on November 1, New Zealand and India are slated to contest five One-Day Internationals followed by two Test matches throughout November. Additionally, an India A squad is scheduled to tour New Zealand for three four-day fixtures running from October 24 to November 10, serving as part of the broader lead-up to the Test series. With the T20I squad selection imminent next week, Mitchell Santner is widely tipped to captain the side against the defending T20 World champions.
