Macklin Celebrini Appointed Youngest Captain in San Jose Sharks History

San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini has been named the 11th full-time captain in franchise history, becoming the youngest player to hold the role at 20 years old and the youngest active captain across the National Hockey League. General manager Mike Grier announced the appointment following a team practice at Sharks Ice, where former captain Joe Thornton formally presented Celebrini with his No. 71 jersey.

Gabriel Landeskog previously held the distinction of youngest NHL captain, being slightly younger than Sidney Crosby when he received the role in 2007. Additionally, Vincent Lecavalier was named captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2000 before eventually losing the position.

Connor McDavid was previously named the youngest captain in league history by the Edmonton Oilers at age 19. At the time of his appointment, he possessed limited NHL experience with only 45 games played.

Celebrini fills a leadership vacancy that remained open since Logan Couture retired following a chronic groin and pelvic injury that sidelined him for the entire 2024-25 season. Patrick Marleau previously held the franchise record as the youngest Sharks captain when appointed at age 24 in 2004, while Celebrini also edges out Chicago Blackhawks captain Connor Bedard, who took the role at 21 earlier in the month.

The promotion follows a stellar 2025-26 sophomore season in which Celebrini skated in 82 games, netting 45 goals and adding 70 assists for 115 points. That total placed him fourth overall in NHL scoring and broke Joe Thornton's 2006-07 franchise single-season record of 114 points. His output placed him alongside elite company, joining Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby as the only teenagers in league history to record a 40-goal, 70-assist campaign.

Celebrini factored into 46.2 percent of San Jose's total team offense during the regular season, marking the highest rate by an NHL teenager in league history and trailing only Connor McDavid league-wide. His accomplishments earned him a five-year, $94 million contract extension signed in July, carrying an $18.8 million average annual value running through the 2031-32 campaign.

The young forward brings substantial leadership experience beyond club play, having captained Team Canada at the World Championship after leading the Milan Olympics in scoring with five goals en route to a silver medal. Grier noted that Celebrini's relentless work ethic and competitiveness during training camp solidified the leadership transition.

Despite Celebrini's historic individual output, the Sharks missed the postseason for the seventh consecutive year, finishing four points outside the playoff picture despite securing a 34-point standings improvement. San Jose opens the 2026-27 regular season on October 1 hosting the Florida Panthers, relying on their newly appointed young captain and a revamped roster to end their playoff drought.
