Kawhi Leonard Returns to Toronto as Raptors Finalize Trade with Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors have officially completed a blockbuster trade sending two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto, ending a two-month administrative freeze caused by an NBA investigation into salary-cap circumvention. The deal, originally agreed upon on June 30, was delayed while the league probed the Clippers for improper off-court income arrangements involving Leonard and his former business manager, Dennis Robertson.

Under the finalized terms, the Raptors acquire Leonard in exchange for forward Brandon Ingram, guard Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a first-round pick swap, and two second-round selections. To facilitate the move, Leonard waived a $7.45 million trade kicker that would have pushed Toronto above the league's first apron cap. The Raptors are now positioned $2.3 million below that threshold with 13 guaranteed contracts.

The trade's completion follows the conclusion of a yearlong league investigation that resulted in historic sanctions against the Clippers. The NBA fined the franchise $30 million and ordered the forfeiture of five future first-round picks spanning 2029 through 2033. Additionally, chairman Steve Ballmer and president of business operations Gillian Zucker were suspended for one year, while president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank received a six-month unpaid suspension. Leonard himself was ordered to pay a $700,000 penalty, though his contract remained intact.

Commissioner Adam Silver characterized the penalties as a necessary defense of the collective bargaining system, citing flagrant violations and institutional failures within the Clippers organization. The league found that the club had initiated off-court income opportunities for Leonard through companies doing business with the team, including the now-bankrupt Aspiration Partners.

For Toronto, the acquisition marks a reunion with the centerpiece of their 2019 championship run. General manager Bobby Webster stated that the organization values Leonard's leadership and championship mindset as they aim to contend in a highly competitive Eastern Conference. Leonard, who is entering the final year of his current contract, is expected to negotiate an extension with the Raptors.

Conversely, the Clippers are undergoing a significant roster reset. Having moved on from their veteran core, the team is now building around Darius Garland and rookie Keaton Wagler. The Clippers currently hold the lowest roster continuity rate in the NBA, with players under contract for the 2026-27 season accounting for only 42 percent of the minutes played during the previous campaign. The two teams are scheduled to meet for the first time this season in a preseason game in Vancouver on October 10, followed by regular-season matchups on November 2 and January 1.
