Israel Chess Chief Blasts FIDE Over Yom Kippur Forfeits at Olympiad

Israel Chess Federation president Zvika Barkai has sharply criticized the International Chess Federation, alleging that governing authorities failed to honour written agreements regarding scheduling accommodations for Yom Kippur at the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand. Both Israel's men's and women's teams forfeited their Round 6 matches on Monday after opposing federations declined to adjust match timings to accommodate the holy day.

The scheduling crisis unfolded across consecutive rounds at the international tournament. While Round 5 fixtures were successfully moved forward following cooperative agreements with Singapore and Colombia, Round 6 matches falling directly on Yom Kippur encountered resistance from the Netherlands in the Open section and Bulgaria in the Women's division. With no alternative times agreed upon, Israeli players did not appear at the board, resulting in official 4-0 forfeit losses.

Accommodations in FIDE team events have operated strictly on an ad-hoc bilateral basis, as shown when Singapore and Colombia agreed to early starts before refusals occurred in Round 6. FIDE declined to enshrine formal Yom Kippur scheduling arrangements into official competition regulations despite advance written requests from the Israel Chess Federation.

Speaking exclusively to reporters, Barkai asserted that the governing body had provided written assurances months prior to the tournament. According to the federation chief, the understanding was that eve-of-holiday matches would be advanced while fixtures falling on Yom Kippur itself would commence two hours later, after sundown.

Barkai criticized FIDE for omitting these arrangements from official competition regulations out of concern for election-related backlash, leaving adjustments dependent on individual opponent consent. While expressing gratitude toward Singapore and Colombian teams for their earlier sporting gesture, the Israeli chief condemned the Dutch and Bulgarian federations for refusing minor adjustments.

A 4-0 forfeit loss severely depresses team rankings and downstream Swiss pairings, shifting competitive ceilings toward a top-15 or top-20 placement. Furthermore, unplayed forfeit losses contribute zero points to team Sonneborn-Berger tiebreak calculations under FIDE Handbook regulations.

FIDE officials maintained that while schedule adjustments were requested, opposing federations retained full regulatory rights under tournament rules to decline match alterations. Consequently, the matches were recorded as clean defeats, substantially harming Israel's tournament standings.

Despite the setback, Barkai confirmed that the controversy would not disrupt the delegation's remaining campaign. The Israeli teams intend to continue competing to secure a final position around 15th place, maintaining that any finish above 20th would represent a notable sporting achievement for the federation.
