Tata Group Stocks Rally as Tata Sons Board Reappoints N. Chandrasekaran
Shares of several Tata Group companies surged on Wednesday following reports that the board of Tata Sons has approved a fresh five-year term for Executive Chairman N. Chandrasekaran. Tata Chemicals saw its share price climb 14 percent to Rs 832, while Tata Investment Corporation rose 6 percent to Rs 720, as investors reacted to the leadership development and ongoing speculation regarding a potential initial public offering for the group holding company.
Leadership Dispute and Board Conflict
The reappointment of N. Chandrasekaran has triggered a formal conflict within the conglomerate. While the board of Tata Sons voted in favor of the extension, Tata Trusts, which holds a 66 percent stake in the holding company, has publicly challenged the decision. The Trusts stated that because Noel Tata, a nominee director on the board, voted against the proposal, the reappointment is legally void.
Tata Trusts further asserted that Chandrasekaran had previously communicated a decision not to seek reappointment upon the conclusion of his current term on February 20, 2027. According to the Trusts, that decision had already attained finality, and they have advised Tata Sons to initiate the process for appointing a successor through a formal selection committee, in accordance with the company's Articles of Association.
IPO Preparations and Regulatory Context
The market rally was further fueled by reports that Tata Sons is preparing for a public listing, a move long resisted by the group but now viewed by minority shareholders, including the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, as a practical method to unlock value. This development follows a recent decision by the Reserve Bank of India to reject the company's application for voluntary surrender of its Certificate of Registration as a Core Investment Company.
Despite the internal friction between the Tata Sons board and Tata Trusts, the market sentiment remains focused on the potential for a public offering. N. Chandrasekaran, who took over as chairman in 2017, remains a central figure in the group's strategic direction as it navigates these governance challenges and the regulatory requirements for a potential listing.
