Vellore Church Collapse Kills Three as Nationwide Incidents Disrupt Public Services

A tragic structural collapse at an under-construction Church of South India building in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district has left three labourers dead and eleven others injured. The incident occurred on Thursday at Mandi Krishnapuram near Katpadi, where a 20-foot steel scaffolding and support structure failed while workers were pouring concrete for the roof. Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Arakkonam, worked through the night to extract victims from the debris. Vellore District Collector P S Leela Alex confirmed that the administration has initiated a formal investigation into the structural failure, specifically to determine if the builder possessed the necessary permits and adhered to safety regulations.

This industrial tragedy coincides with a day of widespread operational disruptions across India, ranging from infrastructure-related displacements to nationwide industrial action. As rescue operations concluded in Vellore, authorities in other states were managing separate crises, including severe flooding in Bihar, a nationwide bank strike, and fatal road accidents in Maharashtra. The collapse at the Mandi Krishnapuram site has prompted immediate scrutiny of construction safety standards in the region. According to local police, the sudden failure of the steel scaffolding trapped workers beneath heavy concrete and rubble. The injured were transported to multiple facilities, including the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital and the Christian Medical College Hospital, with at least eight individuals reported to be in stable condition as of Friday.

District Collector P S Leela Alex stated that a committee would be formed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. The investigation is tasked with verifying the legality of the construction project, including whether the builder had secured all required building permits and approvals. Police are also conducting a parallel probe into the circumstances surrounding the collapse to determine if criminal negligence played a role in the structural failure.

Public sector banking operations faced significant disruptions on Friday as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) launched a nationwide strike. The umbrella body, representing approximately 90 per cent of bank officers and employees, is pressing for the immediate implementation of a five-day workweek. The drive, conducted under heavy security, has left local traders without livelihoods, prompting urgent appeals to the Lieutenant Governor for rehabilitation and the provision of alternative commercial spaces. Shopkeepers, some of whom claim to have held municipal records for their properties for over five decades, have expressed significant resentment over the lack of prior resettlement arrangements.

In Nanded, a head-on collision between a Tata Magic passenger vehicle and a truck at Sitakhandi Ghat claimed six lives. Simultaneously, in Bhandara, a pickup vehicle carrying labourers collided with a truck on the Nagpur-Raipur National Highway, resulting in eight deaths. The victims in the Bhandara incident are believed to be migrant workers from Chhattisgarh.

These accidents add to a series of public safety incidents reported across the country, including a fatal fire in Uttar Pradesh caused by an LPG leak and the ongoing recovery efforts following devastating flash floods in Nepal, which have now claimed 1,385 lives. In a separate development, police in Thiruvananthapuram seized 1,375 packets of banned tobacco products and arrested an Assam native, underscoring the ongoing enforcement challenges regarding illegal trade and public health regulations.

Accountability measures are underway in several high-profile cases, including the recent building collapse in Delhi's Satya Niketan, where three individuals have been remanded to police custody. The Patiala House Court has also denied anticipatory bail to a PG operator linked to the property, citing the suppression of a rent agreement in the application. Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, the Thane mental hospital has disbursed Rs 58 lakh in wage arrears to 68 sanitation workers following a direct intervention by the Bombay High Court.

This disbursement follows a 28-day chain hunger strike by the workers, who had been denied wages by their contractor.
