Vellore Church Collapse Claims Three Lives as Rescue Operations Conclude

A tragic structural collapse at an under-construction Church of South India building in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, has resulted in three confirmed deaths and left several others injured. The incident occurred on Thursday at Mandai Krishnapuram near Katpadi, when the upper floor slab of the structure gave way while laborers were in the process of pouring concrete. Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force, worked through the night to clear the debris and locate trapped individuals.

Initial rescue efforts successfully pulled ten workers from the rubble, while a final trapped individual was located and extracted by emergency personnel. The injured were transported to various medical facilities, including the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital and the Christian Medical College Hospital, for urgent treatment. District authorities have initiated a formal investigation into the collapse, with police and administrative teams tasked with determining the cause of the structural failure and verifying whether the construction project possessed the necessary legal approvals and building permits.

The collapse of the 20-foot steel scaffolding and support structure at the Mandai Krishnapuram site triggered a massive search and rescue operation. According to local officials, the sudden failure of the support system left workers buried under a significant volume of concrete and construction debris. Vellore District Collector P S Leela Alex confirmed that while the rescue operation has concluded, the focus has now shifted to medical care for the survivors and a thorough forensic examination of the site.

Eight of the rescued workers were reported to be in stable condition as of Friday morning. The district administration has announced the formation of a specialized committee to probe the incident. This committee is mandated to examine the structural integrity of the design and the adherence to safety protocols during the concrete pouring process. Police are also conducting a parallel investigation to determine if negligence played a role in the fatal collapse.

Banking operations across India faced significant disruptions on Friday as the United Forum of Bank Unions launched a nationwide strike. The protest, which primarily affected public sector banks, was organized to demand the immediate implementation of a five-day workweek and the resolution of long-standing wage-related grievances. In Jammu, the administration continued a demolition drive in the Satwari-Nai Basti area to facilitate highway expansion, leading to the removal of 13 shops on Friday following the destruction of nearly 20 structures the previous day. Affected shopkeepers have expressed strong resentment, alleging that the action has disrupted livelihoods that have existed for decades. The demolition is part of a broader infrastructure project aimed at expanding highway capacity within Jammu city, though the lack of immediate relocation support remains a point of contention for the displaced business owners.

Police in Bengaluru have arrested nine individuals in connection with three separate cases involving the smuggling of mobile phones and prohibited items into the Central Prison. Investigations revealed the alleged involvement of prison staff, including a warder and a chief warder, in facilitating the supply of devices to inmates. The Telangana Legislative Assembly passed the Telangana Municipalities (Fourth Amendment) Bill, 2026, which enables the co-option of transgender persons as members of municipal corporations. The legislation, moved by Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu, aims to provide representation for transgender individuals in municipal administration and decision-making processes. The bill proposes the co-option of one transgender member in each of the nine municipal corporations located outside the Core Urban Region of Hyderabad.
