Tawang Stages 14th International Tourism Mart to Highlight North East Travel Offerings

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, is hosting the 14th International Tourism Mart from October 29 to 31, 2026. The Ministry of Tourism organised the event to connect travel businesses and promote destinations in India’s eight northeastern states. Convened by the Union Ministry of Tourism alongside the Arunachal Pradesh administration and regional state governments, the three-day gathering at Hotel Vivanta brings together more than 200 participants, including 43 international buyers representing 22 nations. The summit marks the return of the annual flagship mart to Tawang after a 13-year interval, following its second edition in the border town in 2013, while Gangtok in Sikkim staged the prior event in November 2025.
Ministerial Opening and Regional Showcase
Participating in the inaugural assembly on October 29 were Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, state Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi. All eight northeastern states, comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura, are delivering destination presentations that outline distinct regional attractions, local tourism products, and multi-state travel circuits. Overseas commercial buyers include European and American delegates from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Other participating buyers represent Australia, Bhutan, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. Commercial sessions scheduled for October 30 will link international and domestic buyers directly with regional service operators to cultivate business partnerships.
Ministry of Tourism figures for the prior Gangtok edition in November 2025 put attendance above 500 delegates, with foreign buyers and operators from about 19 countries.
Sectoral Deliberations and Access Policies
Policy seminars conducted during the event focus on key aspects of tourism development and visitor regulations across northeastern jurisdictions. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is leading specialized discussions on expanding the regional live events and concert economy. In a concurrent policy forum, the Ministry of Home Affairs heads deliberations regarding visitor access into Protected Areas and Restricted Areas. Automaker Royal Enfield delivered an industry presentation titled 'Beyond Destinations: Creating Immersive Journeys in North East India' to investigate prospects for experiential travel. In addition, a ministerial conference of northeastern tourism ministers convenes on October 30 under the chairmanship of Shekhawat to deliberate on sector expansion and inter-state coordination.
Nagaland Tribune reported that Home Minister Amit Shah had said on October 26 that the government would consider easing protected-area permit rules. The report does not establish that any rule had already changed.
Hub Network reports that the first phase of Swadesh Darshan approved 16 projects in the North East, totalling ₹1,309 crore. Phase two approved 17 projects worth ₹564 crore. Approvals should not be mistaken for actual expenditure.
Field Visits and Cultural Showcases
Cultural programming and regional heritage form major pillars of the official itinerary. The North East Bazaar highlights the area's traditional handlooms, crafts, textiles, and artistic legacy. Delegates also experience regional culinary traditions and local performing arts displaying the diverse customs of the eight northeastern states. Technical field itineraries take attendees to regional cultural landmarks, including Tawang Monastery, Buddha Park, Shernup Village, the Tawang War Memorial, Jaswant Garh War Memorial, Jang Waterfall, Pankang Teng Tso Lake, and Urgelling Gompa, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. Following the conclusion of the mart, specialized familiarization travel for international delegates commences from Guwahati on November 1.
