Mamata Faction Unveils Football Player Symbol After Election Commission Freezes Trinamool Name

The Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the All India Trinamool Congress unveiled a new logo on Monday, featuring an interim election symbol depicting a football player, as the party scrambles to establish a fresh electoral identity ahead of upcoming bypolls. The design places the football player at its centre, surrounded by the words 'Mamata All India Trinamool Congress' in white against a blue background, incorporating the traditional saffron, white and green tricolour.

This rapid rebranding follows an interim directive issued by the Election Commission on September 17, which froze the use of the original 'All India Trinamool Congress' name and its reserved flowers-and-grass symbol amid an escalating internal dispute over control of the party. The poll panel allotted separate temporary identities for the October 6 bypolls, designating the Mamata faction as 'Mamata All India Trinamool Congress' with the football player symbol, while a rival faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee and Arup Roy received the name 'Democratic Trinamool Congress' and an envelope symbol.

When Mamata Banerjee founded the Trinamool Congress on January 1, 1998 after splitting from the Indian National Congress, she did not dispute the Congress Hand symbol, but registered a new party and was allotted the Jora Ghas Phul symbol. In the 1966 Bangla Congress breakaway from the Indian National Congress in West Bengal, candidates contested the 1967 election on free symbols before the Election Commission recognized Bangla Congress as a State party in 1969 and reserved the Plough symbol for it.

With only a fortnight remaining before the Nandigram and Rejinagar bypolls, the Mamata camp initiated a widespread campaign to ensure voters connect the new symbol with the political identity traditionally associated with the party. Party sources stated that all office-bearers, leaders, workers and elected representatives were directed to disseminate the new logo across social media platforms starting Monday afternoon.

The contest carries divergent paths across constituencies. In Rejinagar, the rival factions will engage in a direct electoral clash using their newly assigned names and symbols. In Nandigram, however, the political landscape shifted after Mamata Banerjee's nominee, Sanchita Pradhan Dey, withdrew from the race following a meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, leading the Mamata faction to extend support to Congress candidate Milan Pradhan.

Parallel to the electoral campaign, the dispute has advanced through both the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Mamata Banerjee, made an urgent mentioning before a three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, arguing that the Election Commission's interim freeze during ongoing proceedings under the Election Symbols Reservation and Allotment Order of 1968 was unwarranted. Chief Justice Kant stated that the court would try to list the matter for hearing during the week.

In a separate proceeding, the Calcutta High Court declined to alter its earlier order regarding three party bank accounts held with a private bank. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya observed that because the Election Commission has not yet issued a final decision on the party ownership dispute, there was no reason to modify the court's prior arrangement. Under that order, first issued on July 9, a court-appointed special officer oversees the accounts, allowing the Mamata faction to retain control for routine party activities and employee salary disbursements until January 29, while the police continue investigating allegations of illegal transactions involving the accounts.
