BJP Leaders Slam Rahul Gandhi Over PM Modi Mimicry at Indore Student Event

A fresh political controversy erupted across political circles on Sunday after stand-up comedian Pulkit Mani performed a mimicry skit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a student interaction event attended by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Indore.

The event, titled 'Chhatron Ki Goonj', took place in Madhya Pradesh, where Mr. Gandhi was seen laughing and interacting with the comedian on stage. During the performance, the artist mimicked interactions between the Prime Minister and foreign leaders while using conversational phrases. While the performer did not explicitly state the Prime Minister's name during the skit, Mr. Gandhi engaged directly by saying, "How are you, Modi ji?" while hugging him.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party figures reacted sharply to the video footage shared by the Congress party on social media platforms. Union Minister Piyush Goyal criticized the opposition leader on X, describing him using a colloquial expression and accusing him of resorting to theatrical mockery. Goyal questioned the necessity of dragging the Prime Minister's name into such events.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also condemned the episode, stating that a historic political party had been reduced to providing entertainment for a shrinking support base. Rijiju contrasted the opposition's approach with public sentiment regarding the Prime Minister's electoral standing and raised objections concerning references made during the stage performance regarding elderly mothers.

Additional criticism came from BJP national general secretary Smriti Irani, who posted a critical verse in Hindi on social media. BJP national secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak further asserted that the performance demonstrated a growing intellectual bankruptcy and disconnection from traditional values within the opposition camp.

Congress leaders strongly defended both the student outreach programme and the stage performance. Senior leader Bhupesh Baghel retorted that every individual's mother deserved respect, questioning why political opponents did not extend similar sensitivities when criticisms were directed at Rahul Gandhi's family.

Congress MP Imraan Masood maintained that the student outreach initiative had deeply unsettled political rivals, asserting that opposition figures frequently thought of the Congress leader. Meanwhile, Congress leader TS Singh Deo drew a distinction between acceptable political critique and abusive language, noting that normal joking or mimicry should not attract objections in public life.

Senior Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy also weighed in to defend Rahul Gandhi, asserting that humour should retain a place in political discourse. Roy stated that the performance merely repeated statements previously made by the Prime Minister himself rather than constituting a personal insult.

Organizers from the Congress party reported that the 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' initiative has drawn substantial participation from young people across multiple regions, focusing discussions on education costs and employment opportunities. AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir claimed that over 200,000 young individuals had engaged with the programme nationwide.

The war of words coincided with unfolding political realignments, including recent discussions regarding electoral cooperation between the Congress and Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. Regional developments saw the nomination of local candidates and subsequent legal proceedings involving party representatives as political parties prepare for forthcoming electoral contests.
