HAL Hands Over Tejas Twin-Seater Trainers and HTT-40 Aircraft to Indian Air Force

State-run aerospace manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited transferred LCA Tejas Final Operational Clearance twin-seater trainers and HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft to the Indian Air Force during an official ceremony in Bengaluru. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of Civil Aviation K Rammohan Naidu attended the proceedings, which also featured the delivery of four Dhruv Next Generation helicopters to Pawan Hans Limited.

The handover marks a notable step in domestic defense manufacturing and self-reliance initiatives. Officials underscored that the deployed platforms exhibit expanding domestic capabilities across military aviation, civil rotary-wing production, and pilot training infrastructure.

The formal transfer included two Light Combat Aircraft Tejas FOC twin-seater trainers, wrapping up twin-seater deliveries under an initial government contract finalized in 2010 for 16 LCA fighter aircraft and four twin-seater units in FOC configuration. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited additionally plans to supply 29 MK1-A twin-seater LCA aircraft to the Air Force by the 2033-34 financial year.

the initial HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft manufactured under a 70-aircraft supply agreement with the Defence Ministry was transferred to the Indian Air Force. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally designated the HTT-40 basic trainer as 'Ankur' during the event.

The LCA FOC twin-seater trainer functions as a lightweight, all-weather, multi-role 4.5-generation platform engineered to support advanced pilot instruction while preserving full combat operational readiness. The aircraft incorporates modern avionics, featuring relaxed static stability, a quadruplex fly-by-wire flight control system, an advanced glass cockpit, integrated digital avionics, and composite airframe structures.

Crafted by the Aircraft Research and Design Centre, the HTT-40 basic trainer utilizes a turboprop engine configured to deliver stable low-speed handling characteristics. The aircraft is equipped for aerobatics, general handling, instrument flying, night navigation, and close formation flying to fulfill foundational training requirements for military pilots.

The ceremony signaled the commercial entry of the Dhruv Next Generation helicopter into the civil aviation sector alongside the delivery of four units to Pawan Hans Limited. The 5.5-tonne, light twin-engine, multi-role aircraft stands as India's first indigenously produced civil helicopter meeting AS-4 requirements, positioning it for demanding civilian assignments including offshore operations.

The civil-certified Dhruv NG incorporates a modernized glass cockpit, integrated avionics, advanced navigation systems, crashworthy seats, self-sealing fuel tanks, and twin-engine redundancy to address stringent safety standards.

Addressing the assembled officials, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stressed that pilot combat effectiveness relies on pairing well-trained personnel, advanced technology, integrated systems, and rapid decision-making capabilities. He observed that the HTT-40 holds strong export potential in international markets alongside satisfying domestic training demands.

Singh called on Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to broaden its operational footprint across the complete aerospace value chain, encompassing design, development, manufacturing, certification, lifecycle support, and global marketing. He also advocated for disciplined project timelines to prevent delays that could generate capability gaps or risk technology obsolescence.

The gathering brought together Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K, alongside senior representatives from regulatory bodies and the defense sector.
