According to ThePrint / PTI, the Congress party announced a major organizational reshuffle on Friday, appointing three-time MLA Aradhana Misra Mona as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) ahead of the crucial 2027 assembly elections. Misra, who previously served as the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in the state assembly, succeeds Ajay Rai, who had held the post since August 2023.

According to ThePrint / PTI, the UPCC leadership matrix intentionally balances Brahmin, Muslim, and Dalit representation to reconstruct Congress's traditional social coalition. According to ThePrint / PTI, the dual state overhauls reflect an AICC push to install fresh state executives well ahead of the 2027 assembly election cycle.

According to ThePrint / PTI, the sweeping changes, approved by party leadership with immediate effect, also introduced new leadership tiers within the state unit. According to ThePrint / PTI, mP Imran Masood was appointed working president of the UPCC, while Chaudhary Virendra Singh was approved as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, Devinder Nishad and Alok Prasad were named senior vice presidents of the state organization.

According to ThePrint / PTI, imran Masood's elevation is viewed as an explicit bid to mobilize Muslim voters in western UP while positioning Congress for assertive seat-sharing negotiations with the Samajwadi Party. According to ThePrint / PTI, for Congress-SP Alliance Seat Sharing, Imran Masood's elevation complicates alliance coordination with the Samajwadi Party following recent verbal confrontations between Masood and the SP leadership.

According to ThePrint / PTI, for AICC Official Appointment Order, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge officially approved the appointments of Aradhana Misra-Mona as UPCC president and Imran Masood as working president with immediate effect.

Generational Succession and Electoral Legacy in Uttar Pradesh

The leadership transition places the state party apparatus under the guidance of Aradhana Misra, whose political career is closely tied to the Rampur Khas constituency in Pratapgarh. The seat has served as a long-standing political stronghold for her family; her father, veteran Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari, represented the constituency for nine consecutive terms before Misra secured the seat through a 2014 by-election and subsequently won consecutive terms in 2017 and 2022.

Before entering the legislative assembly, Misra built grassroots experience serving as a local Block Pramukh in Pratapgarh and taking on various organizational duties within the party. Her elevation comes as the opposition party seeks to rebuild its organizational machinery in Uttar Pradesh following years of electoral setbacks.

Punjab Unit Shakeup Following Leadership Resignation

According to ThePrint / PTI, in a parallel organizational shift announced on the same day, the Congress party appointed former Olympian and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC). Singh's appointment took immediate effect following the resignation of Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who had led the Punjab unit since April 2022.

Warring tendered his resignation after meeting with senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi. The leadership transition in Punjab followed months of internal friction and consultations led by party state affairs in-charge Sachin Pilot, as the party reorganizes its provincial ranks ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
