Chennai Airport Opens New Cab Pick-Up Plaza Following Two-Year Delay

A dedicated cab pick-up plaza at Chennai airport opened to air passengers on Sunday morning, bringing an end to a two-year delay that had forced travelers to walk toward the multi-level car parking facility. Union Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu inaugurated the infrastructure virtually, noting that the physical opening was not postponed despite scheduling conflicts with the ongoing BRICS summit.

Developed at a cost of 22.88 crore rupees, the new facility sits approximately 30 metres in front of the T1 Domestic Terminal. The infrastructure is designed to accommodate 28 vehicles simultaneously across two dedicated pickup lanes, while a third lane functions as the designated exit path. Officials have cleared major ride-hailing aggregators, including Ola, Uber, Rapido, Fastrack, Red Taxi, and prepaid services, to operate within the plaza during its initial phase, with plans to expand access to other yellow board commercial vehicles later.

The infrastructure was commissioned to resolve chronic passenger grievances regarding arrival logistics. Union Minister Naidu noted that travelers carrying heavy baggage, elderly passengers, and families with young children previously faced strenuous walks to reach the multi-level car parking structure on the second floor. The new ground-level plaza positions vehicles immediately outside the terminal exit doors.

Early users of the facility reported immediate improvements in convenience compared to the legacy parking arrangement. The facility also features a seating capacity of 150 individuals to manage passenger flow during peak arrival hours.

Addressing broader infrastructure pressures, the Civil Aviation Minister pointed to the unique operational challenges of managing a space-constrained airport situated in the heart of the city amid climbing passenger footfall. To counter these limitations, the Ministry is advancing multiple concurrent expansion initiatives across the airport complex.

Construction on the T3 Terminal is advancing across multiple fronts and remains on schedule for completion by April 2027. Ministry officials are continuously monitoring the project timeline to prevent further schedule slippage, with the new terminal expected to elevate the airport annual passenger handling capacity from roughly 20 million to 35 million travelers.

Project execution has faced sustained headwinds, including operational terminals operating on both sides of active construction zones and supply chain disruptions driven by the West Asia crisis. Despite these constraints, authorities maintain that active oversight is keeping construction milestones on track.

Looking beyond the T3 timeline, the Ministry confirmed that a planned Terminal 5 is currently in the initial design and planning stage. Officials intend to coordinate closely with the State government to integrate the new terminal, a development projected to lift the overall capacity of Chennai airport to approximately 55 million passengers per annum.
