Amazon Defender Chief Raoni Diagnosed With Digestive System Cancer at 94

Renowned Brazilian Indigenous leader and Amazon rainforest defender Chief Raoni Metuktire has been diagnosed with an aggressive digestive system cancer at the age of 94. The Raoni Institute announced the diagnosis, stating that the prominent environmental campaigner is currently receiving palliative care at his home in the Brazilian heartland.

The health crisis unfolded over several months after Chief Raoni initially sought medical attention for persistent abdominal pain. Diagnostic imaging revealed an advanced-stage tumor, which subsequently caused a severe intestinal obstruction and necessitated emergency hospitalization in Sao Paulo on June 19 for surgical intervention.

Following the surgical procedure in Sao Paulo, medical professionals evaluated Chief Raoni's advanced age, overall clinical condition, and the severe risks associated with aggressive oncological treatments. Consequently, his care team opted to transition the Indigenous leader to palliative management rather than pursuing further invasive therapies.
