How Is Gold Price Calculated? (Global & Indian Formula)

Understand global benchmarks (LBMA, COMEX), domestic Indian import math, local IBJA/MCX rates, and retail jewellery billing formulas.

1. Global Price Discovery: Who Sets International Rates?

Gold does not have a single central pricing authority. Instead, its global baseline is discovered through massive trading volume across major institutional hubs. Global spot rates directly influence domestic retail pricing, as well as institutional allocations like Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs) and central reserve strategy (per central bank gold buying data).

The LBMA Gold Price (London)

The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) is the world's largest OTC wholesale market for physical gold. Twice daily (10:30 AM and 3:00 PM London time), an electronic auction establishes the global spot benchmark.

COMEX Futures (New York)

While London dominates physical bullion settlement, the CME Group Commodity Exchange (COMEX) in New York drives continuous paper futures prices dictating minute-by-minute international spot movements.

2. How International USD Spot Becomes Domestic Indian Rates

India imports over 90% of its physical gold requirements under Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines. Converting global USD/oz spot prices into local retail rates (for 24K, 22K, or 18K purity grades) involves 4 mathematical conversion steps:

Step 1
Unit Conversion
Convert global Troy Ounce (31.103g) USD price to a 10-gram baseline unit.
Step 2
Currency FX Rate
Multiply by live USD/INR exchange rate. A weaker Rupee inflates Indian rates.
Step 3
Tariffs & Cess
Add Basic Customs Duty + Agriculture Infrastructure Development Cess (AIDC).
Step 4
Local Benchmarks
Add bank import premiums & freight to establish MCX Futures and IBJA spot benchmarks.
Primary domestic benchmark authorities: Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA).

How Is Gold Price Calculated? The Complete Guide

Understand global benchmarks (LBMA, COMEX), domestic Indian import math, local IBJA/MCX rates, and retail jewellery billing formulas.

Essential Market Insights

1Global gold prices are benchmarked in US Dollars per Troy Ounce (1 Troy Ounce = 31.103 grams).
2The international benchmark is set twice daily by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).
3Indian prices depend heavily on the USD/INR exchange rate; a weaker Rupee makes gold more expensive in India even if global prices remain flat.
4The domestic price incorporates India’s base import duty, agricultural cess (AIDC), bank premiums, and logistics costs.
5Retail jewellery bills must always include the base gold value, making charges (8%-25%), and a flat 3% GST.

Pricing & Formula Calculation Rule

Final Price = (Gold Rate per Gram × Weight in Grams) + Making Charges + GST (3%)
Worked Calculation Example:
• goldRate22K: 6,500
• weightGrams: 20
• makingChargePercent: 15
• goldValue: 1,30,000
• makingChargeAmount: 19,500
• subtotal: 1,49,500
• gstAmount: 4,485
• totalFinalPrice: 1,53,985
