Yash Raj Films Locks October Premiere for Keerthy Suresh Starrer Akka
Yash Raj Entertainment has locked an October 30 premiere date for its high-profile period gangster series Akka on Netflix, marking the streaming debut of South Indian actress Keerthy Suresh. Mounted as the production banner's largest tentpole streaming project to date, the series has been in production since November 2023.
According to Netflix, netflix provides global distribution across over 190 countries, enabling Indian creators to reach international audiences in multiple regional languages. According to Exchange4media, yash Raj Films earmarked Rs 500 crore in investment for its digital vertical YRF Entertainment to produce large-scale streaming projects.
Keerthy Suresh previously won a National Award for Best Actress for her role in Mahanati, and the new series will be written and directed by debutant filmmaker Dharmaraj Shetty.
The narrative unfolds in the fictional South Indian town of Pernuru during the 1980s, centering on an elite matriarchal sisterhood known as the Akkas. This formidable group controls the region's underground gold-smuggling trade, exercising political, social, and economic dominance through a loyal army of fighters before facing an internal and external power struggle.
Narrative Plot and Character Dynamics
The 1980s period drama places Keerthy Suresh at the center of the conflict, where she is pitted against acting powerhouse Radhika Apte. The storyline follows the governing sisterhood of Pernuru whose unshakable criminal empire encounters a severe threat upon the arrival of an outsider harboring a deeply personal vendetta. Rather than engaging in direct combat, the newcomer begins methodically exploiting internal weaknesses, long-standing rivalries, and factional divisions within the matriarchy.
As alliances fracture across Pernuru, the criminal enterprise spirals into a brutal battle for survival, ideological dominance, and vengeance. Alongside Suresh and Radhika Apte, veteran actress Tanvi Azmi anchors a key supporting role in the series. The project is directed by debutant Dharmaraj Shetty, bringing a distinctive visual identity to the period crime landscape.

Akka represents the third major web series collaboration between Yash Raj Entertainment, the streaming division led by Aditya Chopra, and Netflix India. Their prior joint ventures include the Bhopal gas tragedy drama The Railway Men, featuring R. Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu, and Babil Khan, alongside the investigative thriller Mandala Murders, starring Vaani Kapoor, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, and Surveen Chawla.
The strategic partnership between the studio and the streaming platform continues to expand beyond Akka. Production is already underway for Tunnel Men, a forthcoming thriller series based on the 2023 Uttarakhand tunnel rescue operation. Directed by Ambiecka Pandit and Manan Rawat, the rescue drama is slated to go on floors early next year.
According to Pinkvilla, while trade reports indicate the October 30 launch schedule, an official confirmation regarding the premiere date from Netflix remains pending as production milestones culminate.
