Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Secures Rs 12,300 Crore in UK Investment Deals
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay secured investment commitments totaling approximately Rs 12,300 crore during a delegation tour in the United Kingdom, according to state government announcements. The agreements, formalized on Monday, are projected to generate between 9,000 and 9,400 high-value jobs across advanced manufacturing, technology, and engineering sectors in the state.
The delegation's largest single commitment came from auto component major Samvardhana Motherson International Limited, which partnered with its European and UK joint venture entities to pledge Rs 11,000 crore. The state investment facilitation agency, Guidance Tamil Nadu, stated that Motherson will establish integrated Design, Engineering, Manufacturing, Assembly and Logistics facilities across strategic districts.
Global Capability Centres and Tech Expansions
In addition to manufacturing commitments, the delegation secured digital infrastructure and technical consultancy agreements. Professional services firm Ernst & Young committed Rs 1,000 crore to develop a Global Capability Centre in Chennai along the state's upcoming GCC corridor, creating an estimated 2,000 corporate positions. Sweden-based Sigma Technology Group also signed agreements to expand its digital engineering and service operations across Chennai and Tiruchirappalli.
Further reinforcing the state's electrical manufacturing sector, UK-based power equipment manufacturer Wilson Power Solutions finalized a Rs 300 crore investment MoU for a new manufacturing facility in the Thiruvallur district, projected to generate 400 local jobs. These agreements follow the recent implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement on July 15, which officials say has opened broader export avenues for engineering, electronics, and auto components.
Motorsport Tour and Political Transparency Debate
Beyond formal business meetings, Chief Minister Vijay's itinerary included a visit to the Silverstone racing circuit in England, where he flagged off a race featuring actor and racer Ajith Kumar. The stop aligned with the administration's stated objective to develop a world-class motorsport city in Tamil Nadu and foster allied manufacturing industries.
The high-profile itinerary and meetings drew criticism from opposition parties over the transparency of the delegation's schedule. Addressing the scrutiny, TVK spokesperson P Sathya Kumar defended the government's approach by citing competitive federalism among Indian states vying for capital. He stated that details of specific agreements are released systematically as Memoranda of Understanding are signed.
State officials noted that additional investment agreements are expected to be finalized before the delegation concludes its schedule on September 16.
