Mrunal Thakur’s Pooja Meri Jaan Receives A-Rating Ahead of October 2 Release

The upcoming courtroom drama Pooja Meri Jaan, starring Mrunal Thakur and Huma Qureshi, has been granted an A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, which is scheduled for a direct-to-digital premiere on ZEE5 on October 2, marks a departure for Thakur, who has primarily featured in films with U or U/A ratings throughout her career. The only other project in her filmography to receive an A rating was the 2018 drama Love Sonia.

The Central Board of Film Certification evaluated the production and assigned the classification on September 15.

According to the censor certificate issued on September 15, the film has a runtime of 117 minutes and 32 seconds. Produced by Dinesh Vijan under the Maddock Films banner, the project is described as a courtroom drama-cum-thriller. It represents the second consecutive A-rated release for the production house this year, following the earlier release of Cocktail 2. The film also features actors Vikram Singh Chauhan and Vijay Raaz in significant roles.

The production banner has previously achieved significant box office milestones, including a prior release that grossed more than ₹900 crore globally to become a top-grossing adult-rated feature. Additionally, the studio established an eight-film partnership with a major streaming platform for theatrical releases scheduled through 2027.

Directed by Navjot Gulati, the film has faced a lengthy journey to the screen, having been shot in 2022. The narrative centers on the character of Pooja, who finds herself embroiled in a legal battle following the suicide of a friend, Aniket, whose romantic advances she had rejected. Huma Qureshi portrays a lawyer named Sana who defends Pooja as public and legal scrutiny intensifies. The trailer suggests a complex exploration of consent, societal judgment, and the shifting perspectives surrounding the central conflict.

Thakur has described the role as one of the most demanding of her career, noting that the script requires the audience to navigate shifting perceptions of truth. The release on ZEE5 follows a period of anticipation, with reports indicating that the film was previously postponed to accommodate other projects within the industry. The premiere on October 2 concludes a four-year gap between the film's initial production wrap and its final public release.
