Real Kashmir FC Scores International Emmy Nod as Vir Das Earns Third Nomination

India secured two nominations at the 54th International Emmy Awards, led by the SonyLIV drama series Real Kashmir Football Club and comedian Vir Das for his stand-up special Fool Volume. The nominations, announced on September 23, 2026, mark a significant milestone for regional storytelling from Jammu and Kashmir on the global stage.

The platform's prestige series debuted across seven different languages, garnering strong critical praise and an IMDb score of 8.2. India's history at the International Emmys includes Delhi Crime winning Best Drama Series in 2020 as the country's first victorious show, followed by a 2023 comedy win for Vir Das and a Directorate Award recognition for Ektaa R Kapoor.

Real Kashmir Football Club, which premiered in December 2025, received a nomination in the Drama Series category. Directed by Rajesh Mapuskar and Mahesh Mathai, the series chronicles the true story of Jammu and Kashmir's first professional football club, starring Manav Kaul and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub alongside an ensemble cast including Abhishant Rana, Muazzam Bhat, Priya Chauhan, Anmol Thakeria Dhillon, Afnan Fazli, and Shaheem Bhat.

The narrative behind the series stems from the aftermath of the devastating 2014 Kashmir floods. Journalist Shamim Meraj and businessman Sandeep Chattoo sought ways to engage local youth following the disaster by distributing footballs in the Valley. This community initiative evolved into the formal establishment of Real Kashmir FC in 2016. Operating through difficult circumstances, including regional unrest, the club made history during the 2017-18 season by going unbeaten in the I-League 2nd Division and earning promotion to India's top tier.

The local film policy provides financial support for production costs and supports regional workers. Meanwhile, competitive national league matches determined the standing of participating football clubs.

In the series adaptation, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub portrays Sohail, a journalist determined to build the club, while Manav Kaul plays Shishir, a businessman supporting the endeavor. Reflecting on the nomination, Kaul shared an anecdote of being at the Paris airport when he first received news of the nod, noting that his director initially wondered if the notification was a scam.

Comedian Vir Das earned his third International Emmy nomination for his Netflix stand-up special Fool Volume, placing him as the sole Indian artist nominated thrice in Emmy history. Das previously earned nominations for For India in 2021 and Landing in 2023, winning the award in the latter year. His latest nomination follows a period during which he temporarily lost his voice, transforming an unexpected silent setback into a deeply personal performance.

Fool Volume competes in the Comedy category alongside Division Palermo Season 2, Man vs Baby, and Old Dog, New Tricks. Meanwhile, Real Kashmir Football Club faces international contenders in the Drama Series category, including A Thousand Blows from the United Kingdom, Careme from France, and Menem from Argentina. Winners will be announced in New York City on November 23, 2026.
