XPENG Launches G9L AI Flagship SUV With Global Rollout Plans
XPENG has officially launched its G9L, a next-generation AI flagship SUV, at an event in Beijing. The vehicle, which will be available in both battery electric vehicle (BEV) and range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) configurations, is set for a global debut on October 12 at the Paris Motor Show. The company plans to introduce the model across 64 international markets as part of a broader strategy to standardize its global manufacturing and safety protocols.
Engineering and AI Integration
The G9L is built on a platform that integrates XPENG's proprietary physical AI technology, utilizing the same Turing AI chip found in the company's IRON humanoid robot. The vehicle features the VLA 2.0 model, which XPENG claims enables fast cross-region generalization for its smart driving and intelligent cockpit systems. Measuring 5,120 mm in length with a 3,100 mm wheelbase, the SUV is designed with a 0.605 wheelbase-to-length ratio intended to optimize interior space and handling agility.
Global Manufacturing and Safety Standards
XPENG has emphasized a global manufacturing strategy for the G9L, with production lines established in both Guangzhou, China, and Graz, Austria. The Graz facility, operated by Magna, will produce the G9L alongside European luxury vehicles, marking the fourth XPENG model to be assembled at the site since the companies began their collaboration in September 2025. To ensure the vehicle meets international requirements, XPENG subjected the G9L to 192 crash tests across four major safety protocols, including Euro NCAP, ANCAP, C-NCAP, and CIASI. The development process included over 6.74 million kilometers of road testing across 26 countries and regions.
Strategic Outlook
During the launch, Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng highlighted the company's focus on the concept of the car as a robot, noting that the firm's in-house AI foundation powers both its vehicles and its humanoid robotics division. While the G9L represents a significant expansion of XPENG's product portfolio, the company faces the challenge of scaling production and maintaining margins in a capital-intensive sector. The upcoming Paris Motor Show event in Hall 6 will serve as the primary platform for the vehicle's international introduction, marking the first step in the planned 64-market rollout.
