Triumph Motorcycles has expanded its India-made 350cc portfolio with the launch of the Bonneville T40, a new retro roadster priced at Rs 2.80 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The model is designed to bring the classic Bonneville aesthetic to a more accessible segment, competing against established players like the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Honda CB350, and Jawa 350. Alongside the T40, Triumph has introduced a lower-spec variant, the Bonneville T4, priced at Rs 2.55 lakh.

Bajaj Auto rolled out the first batch of co-developed Triumph motorcycles from its Chakan 2 facility in Pune with the Speed 400.

Engineering and Design

The Bonneville T40 is powered by a 349cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that produces 29hp and 31.2Nm of torque. While the engine architecture is shared with other Bajaj-built Triumph models, the T40 features a revised cylinder head, dedicated camshafts, smaller throttle bodies, and a new peashooter-style exhaust tuned for low- and mid-range torque. The bike is built on a revised frame featuring a new tubular steel swingarm and twin shock absorbers, designed to achieve the traditional Bonneville look. It weighs 195kg and features a 14.5-litre fuel tank, the largest in the family.

Technology and Features

Despite its retro styling, the T40 is equipped with modern electronics, including a 4-inch circular colour TFT display that supports smartphone connectivity, navigation, and music controls. The display includes a 'Heritage' mode to mimic an analogue appearance. Standard features include five riding modes (Road, Rain, Eco, and two customisable), lean-sensitive ABS, traction control, and cruise control. The T40 rides on 18-inch front and 17-inch rear wire-spoke wheels with tubed MRF tyres. A centre stand is provided as standard to facilitate maintenance.

Customer deliveries for the Triumph Bonneville T4 in India are scheduled to commence from the second week of January 2027.

Market Positioning and Variants

The Bonneville T40 is positioned at a premium compared to its direct rivals. The lower-spec Bonneville T4 variant offers a more affordable entry point by omitting features such as cruise control and the inertial measurement unit (IMU), while retaining the same engine and chassis. Bookings for the new range are open, with deliveries for the T40 scheduled to commence in November 2026, followed by the T4 in January 2027. The T40 is available in three dual-tone colour schemes, while the T4 comes in three solid colours.

What to verify before choosing the T40

The purchase decision should be based on the motorcycle sold in India, not the styling promise implied by the Bonneville name. Riders should compare engine character, weight, seat height, suspension, braking hardware and riding posture with the bikes they actually use. The published ex-showroom figure is only the starting point for ownership cost; insurance, registration, accessories and scheduled servicing can materially change the bill. A short test ride over uneven roads will tell a prospective buyer more about low-speed comfort and clutch feel than an isolated power or displacement statistic.
