Renault Sets October 17 Launch for Duster Hybrid in India

Renault has officially scheduled the launch of the Duster hybrid in India for October 17, introducing a strong-hybrid option to the midsize SUV segment. The upcoming variant joins the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines as the third powertrain choice for the nameplate, arriving as the brand looks to reverse four consecutive months of domestic sales declines.

The market introduction follows a promotional campaign featuring the tagline, "Dear diesel, thank you for the ride. We will take it from here." This messaging addresses the absence of a diesel configuration on the new Duster generation, positioning the electrified setup as the primary alternative for fuel-conscious buyers.

The E-Tech 160 system pairs a naturally aspirated 1,789cc four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors, comprising a 20hp generator and a 49hp drive motor. Supported by a 1.4kWh battery pack, the combined system generates 160hp and 172Nm of torque, delivering a claimed total driving range of 1,000 kilometres.

Renault states that the powertrain draws technical expertise from its Formula 1 operations. Unlike series-parallel arrangements utilizing power-split e-CVT units, the Duster configuration employs a multimode automatic transmission with fixed gear ratios. This mechanical layout allows the vehicle to shift between fixed gears, resulting in engine revolutions that rise and fall similarly to conventional automatics during transitions between electric drive, engine drive, and hybrid combinations.

The strong-hybrid system operates across multiple distinct configurations, including Dynamic Hybrid mode where the engine and electric motors drive the wheels simultaneously, and Electric Motion mode where the electric motor provides standalone propulsion while the petrol engine operates the generator. Additional configurations include a standalone internal combustion engine mode and an Energy Recovery mode for regenerative braking during deceleration.

Renault claims that the setup enables up to 80 percent of urban driving to be completed in all-electric mode, reducing fuel consumption by up to 40 percent compared to conventional internal combustion engine variants. However, real-world efficiency remains subject to ambient temperatures, driving styles, speeds, and traffic conditions.

The Duster hybrid enters the midsize SUV segment as the fourth strong-hybrid option, competing directly against established models such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Victoris, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. While official ex-showroom pricing is anticipated to range between Rs 19 lakh and Rs 23 lakh, early demand has outpaced initial planning.

According to Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President of Renault India, the hybrid variant has received robust interest, particularly from urban centres with 39 percent of metro bookings directed toward the electrified powertrain. Hidalgo noted that initial allocations for the year are sold out, prompting the manufacturer to evaluate production capacity expansion while bookings remain temporarily paused pending further batch announcements.

Renault holds complete ownership of the Chennai plant following the acquisition of Nissan's stake in their joint venture. Additionally, the vehicle includes a transferable warranty covering seven years or 150,000 kilometres under the Renault Forever program, contingent upon scheduled maintenance at authorized facilities.
