Maruti Suzuki Exports From India To Japan Cross One Lakh Milestone

Maruti Suzuki has crossed a major international manufacturing milestone as cumulative shipments of the India-made Jimny 5-door, Fronx, and e Vitara to Japan surpassed one lakh units. The achievement underscores a profound structural shift in automotive manufacturing, with Suzuki utilizing its Indian operations to supply vehicles directly into its highly competitive domestic home market.

Driving this milestone is a carefully timed export rollout that began with the Fronx in August 2024, followed by the Jimny 5-door in December 2024, and expanded further in September 2025 with the introduction of the e Vitara battery electric vehicle. Both the Jimny 5-door and the e Vitara are manufactured exclusively in India, cementing the country's status as a core export hub for the Japanese automaker.

Strong consumer demand across Japanese showrooms has propelled Japan to become Maruti Suzuki's second-largest export market by volume during the 2025-26 financial year. That momentum has carried forward into the April-August period of FY2026-27, maintaining the country's prominent position in the automaker's global supply chain.

Commenting on the achievement, Maruti Suzuki MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi noted that crossing the threshold demonstrates widespread customer acceptance in a mature automotive environment. "The milestone of over 1 lakh exports of Jimny 5-door, FRONX, and eVITARA to Japan is a powerful endorsement of India's manufacturing excellence," Takeuchi said.

The influx of India-manufactured models has propelled Suzuki to become the number one vehicle importer in Japan during FY2025-26, outpacing rival international automakers. Maruti Suzuki-manufactured vehicles accounted for nearly all of the vehicles imported by Suzuki into its home market over the course of the financial year.

This dynamic highlights a four-decade evolution in the industrial relationship between the two nations. Suzuki originally established its footprint in India strictly to manufacture affordable vehicles for domestic consumption, but it now relies heavily on its Indian subsidiary to export advanced compact SUVs and electric vehicles back to Japan.

Beyond shipments to Japan, Maruti Suzuki maintains a dominant foothold in India's overall passenger vehicle exports. During July 2026, multiple models featured prominently among the country's top exported cars, led by the Jimny at 5,784 units and the Fronx at 4,570 units.

The e Vitara also contributed significantly with 2,524 export units during the same monthly window, alongside established nameplates such as the Dzire, Swift, Ertiga, Baleno, and Celerio. The diversification of these shipments highlights how electric and utility vehicles are increasingly leading India's automotive export expansion.
