JLR Unveils Range Rover Sport Electric with 609km WLTP Range

Jaguar Land Rover has officially unveiled the Range Rover Sport Electric and opened order books for the luxury performance SUV in international markets, including India where arrivals are slated for early 2027. Built on the manufacturer's 800-volt Flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture, the battery-electric newcomer expands the Range Rover Sport lineup alongside existing internal combustion and plug-in hybrid variants.
According to IIDE, jLR's global PHEV retail sales grew 21.7% year-on-year in FY25, driven by a 38.2% surge in Range Rover-branded plug-in hybrids serving as a transition bridge to full BEVs. According to Autocar Professional, jLR commenced local assembly of the Range Rover Sport at its Pune facility in May 2024, lowering prices significantly and expanding domestic luxury market penetration.
The upcoming pure-electric propulsion addition rounds out the powertrain offerings for the model alongside mild-hybrid petrol, plug-in hybrid, and six-cylinder petrol and diesel options. Inside the cabin, the manufacturer retained the transmission tunnel to accommodate the battery control module while introducing extra infotainment displays and a Single Pedal feature.
The vehicle is powered by a large 118.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack paired with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering up to 550hp and 850Nm of torque. According to manufacturer specifications, torque delivery builds fifty percent faster than in the larger flagship Range Rover Electric, while sprint times from zero to 100kph are achieved in a claimed 4.5 seconds when engaging the vehicle's dynamic launch mode.
According to Automotive Manufacturing Solutions, jLR installed six automated hairpin winding machines at its Wolverhampton EPMC costing over £7 million, capable of producing one copper hairpin every 2.5 seconds (over 40 million annually). According to Automotive Manufacturing Solutions, hairpin winding technology uses robotic systems to press U-shaped flat copper bars into stators, delivering higher energy density and superior heat dissipation over round-wire coils.
Powertrain and Charging Architecture
The 800-volt electrical setup supports DC fast-charging capabilities of up to 350kW, allowing energy recovery from ten to eighty percent in approximately 22 minutes at compatible high-power stations. JLR states that a brief ten-minute charging session can replenish up to 220km of driving range under WLTP testing protocols, which rate the total maximum range at 609km. The high-capacity battery is backed by a standard eight-year or 160,000km warranty.
Thermal and electrical management also incorporates split-charging compatibility for 400-volt infrastructure, alongside vehicle-to-load capabilities through an external adaptor for running small auxiliary equipment. Braked towing capacity is rated at 2,500kg, supported by an intelligent towing range prediction function that calculates remaining battery reserves based on real-time trailer loads.
Chassis Dynamics and Engineering
Engineers at JLR implemented a 61 percent stiffer body structure compared to combustion-powered equivalents, alongside a centre of gravity positioned 73mm lower than the plug-in hybrid variant. The chassis configuration incorporates double-wishbone front suspension, a five-link rear arrangement, air suspension, twin-valve dampers, electronic active roll control, and all-wheel steering.
Off-road capability remains a core focus, with the electric SUV offering a maximum wading depth of 900mm and a ground clearance of 263mm. Final developmental durability testing was conducted across challenging gradients of up to 45 degrees in Italy's Carrara marble quarries, testing traction across polished stone surfaces and loose marble dust.
Interior Layout and Trim Variants
The cabin architecture closely replicates its internal combustion engine counterpart, maintaining a five-seat layout centred around a 13.1-inch curved Pivi Pro infotainment touchscreen and a 13.7-inch digital driver display. Both digital interfaces feature dedicated electric vehicle menus, while comfort provisions include four-zone climate control, a wireless phone charger, and heated and ventilated seating across both rows.
JLR is structuring the model range across Dynamic SE, Dynamic HSE, Autobiography, and First Edition specifications. Exterior customisation includes available Black Pack and Satin Wrap finishes, while Autobiography buyers can access the manufacturer's Bespoke in-house commissioning service for personalised specifications.
Market Launch and Pricing Projections
Order books are currently open in global markets such as New Zealand, with Indian market arrivals anticipated by March 2027 as a fully imported completely built unit. Industry estimates project an introductory price tag of approximately Rs 2.50 crore ex-showroom in India, positioning the battery-powered variant at a significant premium above existing non-SV combustion variants.
Because the vehicle will be imported as a fully built unit, it will not qualify for import tariff concessions under bilateral trade pacts such as the India-UK Free Trade Agreement. Deliveries and formal regional allocations will proceed following completion of local homologation milestones.
