BYD Recalls 183,000 Vehicles Over Brake Pedal Defect

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has initiated a recall of more than 183,000 vehicles in China to address a manufacturing defect in a brake pedal component. The recall, confirmed by the State Administration for Market Regulation, affects specific Qin and Tang series models produced between 2014 and 2022.

The safety action centers on a batch of brake pedal stopper pads that are prone to cracking or detaching after prolonged use. According to regulatory filings, this degradation can lead to a failure in the pedal mechanism. In extreme scenarios, the defect may cause the vehicle's brake lights to remain illuminated even when the driver is not applying pressure to the pedal, potentially creating confusion for other motorists and increasing the risk of accidents.

BYD has committed to replacing the faulty components at no cost to owners through its network of authorized dealers. The company's regulatory filing outlines this as a proactive measure to mitigate safety risks associated with the identified manufacturing abnormality.

In a separate development, the Chinese market regulator also announced a recall for 686 Firefly-branded electric vehicles manufactured by Nio. This action is linked to a manufacturing defect within a steering system component. The regulator noted that the defect could result in a loss of power steering assistance in extreme cases. Nio has stated it will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the faulty wiring harness free of charge to ensure steering reliability.

Both recalls highlight ongoing quality control scrutiny within China's rapidly expanding electric vehicle sector. While the BYD recall involves a significantly larger volume of vehicles due to the long production window of the affected models, both manufacturers are utilizing standard regulatory channels to manage the component replacements. Owners of the affected BYD and Nio vehicles are advised to contact their respective authorized service centers to schedule the necessary inspections and repairs.
