OpenAI Acquires Camera Startup Glass Imaging for Over $300 Million

OpenAI has acquired Glass Imaging, a California-based startup specializing in artificial intelligence for smartphone cameras, in a transaction valued at upwards of $300 million, according to reports. Founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers who led the development of the iPhone's Portrait Mode, Glass Imaging develops neural networks designed to bypass the physical constraints of mobile hardware.

The acquisition marks a more than threefold increase in valuation for Glass Imaging compared to its $100 million valuation during a 2025 funding round. The startup previously raised approximately $30 million in total funding from investors including GV and Insight Partners, culminating in a May Series A round where executives detailed proprietary technology aimed at improving mobile photography.

Glass Imaging focuses on deploying artificial intelligence during the image capture process rather than relying solely on post-processing software. The startup's proprietary technology, known as GLASS AI, learns the specific characteristics of individual smartphone camera systems to correct optical aberrations and sensor imperfections while reducing noise.

The company developed a new image signal processor known as a Neural ISP to implement these capabilities. According to previous company disclosures, this architecture is designed to deliver fine texture and image content recovery that outperforms traditional pipeline methods, and has seen deployment in external hardware such as Honor's smartphone line.

OpenAI has not publicly disclosed its specific operational roadmap for Glass Imaging, and representatives for both companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment. However, the purchase aligns with broader reported initiatives by the ChatGPT maker to expand into proprietary consumer hardware.

Industry reporting indicates that OpenAI is developing a range of consumer hardware devices, including portable smart speakers equipped with environmental sensors and cameras, as well as AI companion devices. These hardware pursuits parallel OpenAI's ongoing collaboration with veteran Apple designer Jony Ive, whose design startup io was acquired by OpenAI in 2025 for $6.5 billion.
