Google Tests Gemini 'Call for Me' Feature to Handle Phone Tasks on Pixel Phones

Google is introducing a new experimental feature called "Call for Me," which enables its Gemini assistant to make phone calls to businesses on behalf of users. The capability builds on prior conversational tools and allows the AI to manage complex interactions such as checking product inventory, booking restaurant tables, rescheduling appointments, or placing items on hold.
The feature is initially rolling out as a small-scale experiment for users in the United States who own Pixel 11 devices and subscribe to Gemini. Testers must also operate the beta version of the Google Phone app for Android. Google noted that the pilot is starting cautiously because real-world conversations involve significant nuance, requiring time to refine performance before a broader release.

Expanding Automated Phone Capabilities

Unlike earlier iteration tools that were restricted to navigating automated phone trees or waiting on hold until a human representative answered, "Call for Me" is designed to conduct active conversations. Google explained that the updated assistant can share user-approved personal information during calls, opening up a wider array of automated actions.
During live tests, the AI can introduce itself to a business representative, navigate interactive voice response menus, wait through long hold times, and execute the conversational tasks requested by the user. While the system operates independently on the line, users can monitor the dialogue in real time via a live transcript displayed on their screens and take over the call whenever they choose.

Integration and Previous Experiments

The new calling tool relies on the user's personal phone number, with calls dialed directly from the physical device. The rollout arrives after years of iterative experimentation with automated calling technology across Google software divisions. Major milestones include the company's past demonstrations of Google Assistant booking salon appointments with natural conversational fillers, as well as features such as "Hold for Me," "Talk to a Live Rep," and last year's introduction of "Ask for Me," which permitted Gemini to place inquiries regarding pricing and services.
Mobile operating systems are evolving into integrated agentic platforms capable of autonomous real-world task execution. Meanwhile, competing voice capabilities in messaging tools operate without autonomous outbound calling functions.
Google has concurrently expanded its audio capabilities with the release of the Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and Flash-Lite TTS voice models, which cater to interactive entertainment and automated dubbing across thousands of pre-built vocal profiles. However, the "Call for Me" assistant represents a direct consumer application for mobile handsets, placing advanced voice agents into everyday transactional workflows.
Google integrates SynthID audio watermarking into synthetic speech to embed an imperceptible signature that withstands compression or filtering. Additionally, native multimodal architectures such as Gemini Live attain competitive scores on speech benchmarks while offering reduced conversational latency.
